Newly introduced in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, the Waterwing is capable of diving beneath the waves and soaring through the skies, making it an ideal mount for exploring the Burning Shores. To use a Waterwing as a mount, Aloy must craft the Waterwing Override by retrieving key components from destroyed machines.

Crafting and using the Waterwing Override is part of For His Amusement, a main Burning Shores story quest. During this quest, Aloy must learn how to override and fly a Waterwing for the very first time, with help from her new companion Seyka. The Burning Shores DLC isn’t actually very long, so players who stick with the main story campaign will reach this point in the campaign sooner rather than later. However, to complete this quest, players will need to be quick and stealthy.

How To Complete For His Amusement And Get The Waterwing Override

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores Aloy Diving To Search Waterwing Carcass For Waterwing Override Parts

During For His Amusement Aloy and Seyka will agree to split up, so Seyka can track down a flock of Waterwings while Aloy works on crafting the override. Luckily, Beta is on call to offer Aloy some technical assistance and explains that she can assemble the Waterwing Override if Aloy tracks down a Waterwing Ballast Regulator and Wing Membrane. Unfortunately, there aren’t any Waterwings flying about, but Aloy decides to retrieve parts from destroyed Waterwings at the bottom of the ocean.

Players should travel to the location marked on their maps and dive to search for the parts. Unfortunately, there are several Snapmaws roaming this area and Aloy can’t use her weapons underwater. Instead, players will need to use the nearby kelp as cover and sneak around the Snapmaws to search Waterwing carcasses.

The crashed Waterwings can be hard to find, so a good strategy is to use Aloy’s Focus to scan the environment to locate them.

Luckily, there are a few Quen ballistae in this area that Aloy can use to shoot and kill the Snapmaws. This gives players the chance to clear out a few of the machines to give themselves a bit of extra space to search for components.

Each ballista is limited to one shot only, and hitting a Snapmaw can cause other Snapmaws to become aggressive.

Once all of the components have been obtained, players should head over to the nearest workbench in Fleet’s End and craft the Waterwing Override. The quest objective will then change, telling players to head over to Seyka’s location where she’s found several Waterwings.

Players will need to be stealthy here to avoid starting a battle with the Waterwings. Once they’ve managed to get within range of one, players can use the override. This will trigger a cutscene where Aloy overrides the Waterwing and adds yet another machine to Horizon Forbidden West’s collection of machine mounts.

The Waterwing is incredibly useful for navigating the seas and volcanic cliffs of the Burning Shores, allowing Aloy to explore Horizon Forbidden West’s new region from a different perspective.
