How I Met Your Mother is primarily a comedic show, but the show also features some truly deep moments. The dynamic cast of characters, which includes Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), is regularly getting themselves into bizarre and unusual circumstances.
As the characters cope with these circumstances, their values are tested. In some of these situations, they are forced to bear some truly awful conditions. In other cases, they are the truly awful ones. Here are five times we felt bad for Lily, along with five times we hated her.
Hated: Terrible Job With Robin's Bachelorette
During the days leading up to Robin and Barney's wedding, Lily is preparing to move to Rome. This leaves her little time for her maid of honor responsibilities, which include throwing Robin's bachelorette party. Robin is a bit disappointed by her lackluster send-off which was only attended by Patrice.
Realizing she doesn't have female friends, Robin connects with a woman at the hotel and begins to form a friendship with her. Lily then becomes jealous and scares the woman off, before telling Robin they only need each other, even though Lily is about to leave for Italy.
Felt Bad: Ditched At Cheese & Wine Party
At one point, Lily and Marshall decided that they needed to participate in more mature couple activities. They decide to host a cheese and wine party with some other couples. They both wind up hating the event and couldn't wait for the night to end.
Instead of ing Lily and being unhappy together, Marshall decides to sneak out the bathroom window and head out for a more exciting night.
Hated: Secret Debt
Everyone has their weaknesses and for Lily, it is shopping. When the two get turned down for a homeowner's loan, Marshall becomes upset and frustrated with himself, assuming their struggles are due to his student loans. Little does he know, Lily has a massive amount of credit card debt.
This is a pretty serious issue for Lily to be hiding from her partner as debt will have a huge impact on their future and life together. Eventually, she does come clean and tell Marshall the truth, but it never should have been a secret in the first place.
Felt Bad: Struggle To Get Pregnant
When Lily and Marshall decide to start a family, they have a tough time. After numerous attempts, they begin to lose hope. Marshall even goes to a fertility clinic to make sure he isn't infertile.
Though they do eventually have children, watching Lily suffer through the heartbreak of her false positive and failed attempts is a struggle that resonates with many.
Hated: Meddled In Relationships
Lily has trouble with boundaries and is always inserting herself into other's business. While Ted was dating Karen, they discovered an earring that was left in his bed by Lily to try and cause a fight that could have led to their breakup.
At this moment, Ted realizes that this isn't the first time Lily has done this and that she has been secretly meddling in his relationships for years. Secretly destroying your friend's relationships because you don't like their significant other is wrong, especially when that friend is Ted Mosby, the hopeless romantic.
Felt Bad: Relationship With Her Father
Lily and her father had a tumultuous relationship. Her father disappointed her many times when she was growing up and the two eventually became estranged.
In an attempt to repair their relationship, Marshall invites Lily's father, Mickey, to Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner does not go well, with Mickey unintentionally reminding Lily of many of her childhood disappointments.
Hated: Moving To Italy
One of Marshall's life-long dreams was to become a judge; unfortunately, the position could not have been offered to him at a worse time. At the same moment that he is offered his life long dream, Lily is offered a chance to go to Italy for her lifelong dream. This resulted in a massive fight that saw Marshall and Lily both saying extremely hurtful things.
This issue was not entirely Lily's fault as it was a combination of bad timing and poor handling of the situation from both of them. At that moment, both Lily and Marshall were awful.
Felt Bad: Felt Trapped In Her Life
During Robin and Barney's wedding weekend, Lily has an emotional breakdown. She confesses that she sometimes wishes she wasn't a mother. She reveals that she is exhausted as she takes care of children all day at her job and then goes home to do the same.
Lily feels that she doesn't have time for her ions. Even more upsetting, she reveals that she has been silently enduring this burden alone instead of confiding in Marshall about how she feels.
Hated: Left Marshall
It can be difficult to a time when Lily and Marshall weren't a pair but during the first season, they went through a difficult breakup. When Lily is offered the chance to take a summer art internship, she jumps at the chance to follow her dreams. A fight between her and Marshall ensues as the two are approaching their wedding date and Marshall fears this will destroy their relationship.
While Lily is not wrong to chase her dreams, she doesn't assure Marshall that their relationship will survive and when she decides to go, she hands Marshall her engagement ring, telling him that they shouldn't talk for a while.
Felt Bad: Marshall Won't Take Her Back
When Lily returns from her internship, she is eager to resume her relationship with Marshall. They both confess that they had a miserable summer, with Lily itting that leaving was the worst mistake she had ever made in her life.
While Lily was hopeful that Marshall would take her back, he told her that she was right to end the relationship and that they should not get back together. The scene is agonizing to watch as both are clearly in pain and tears well up in Lily's eyes.
