The mighty strength of the Incredible Hulk can do almost anything, but can it lift Thor's hammer Mjolnir? The thunder god's mallet was enchanted by Odin so that it can only be lifted by one who is "Worthy," becoming impossibly heavy when anyone else grasps its handle. But can even the magic of Odin overpower the Hulk?

In today's The Incredible Hulk #25, fans can see Hulk soaring through the air with Mjolnir.

In today's The Incredible Hulk #25 - from Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and Cory Petit - fans can see Hulk soaring through the air with Mjolnir in hand, knocking down Thor and his allies like bowling pins. The two are clashing over Hulk's new sidekick Charlie Tidwell, who has become bonded to the ancient Valravn - a shapeshifting werewolf who once consumed one of Thor's allies.

However, things aren't as they appear - while it initially looks like Hulk is lifting Mjolnir, he's actually just catching a ride as Thor summons the weapon back to his hand. Hulk allows himself to be dragged by Mjolnir, taking the fight to his former Avengers teammate at blistering speed. So no, Hulk isn't worthy, but he has officially lifted Mjolnir once before...

Hulk Has Lifted Mjolnir... But Not By Being Worthy

The Enchantment of Thor's Hammer Can Be Cheated

Hulk and Mjolnir-1

Thor is one of Hulk's oldest rivals, with the two having clashed again and again over the years. It's therefore no surprise that Hulk has dealt with Mjolnir and its enchantment more than most, trying to pick up the hammer on a number of occasions. Marvel has played tricks on fans before where it appeared Hulk was worthy - in Indestructible Hulk #6 (Mark Waid, Walter Simonson), Hulk lifts the hammer and declares himself worthy, only for it to be revealed that once again, Thor is just summoning his hammer and Hulk is along for the ride.

In the early days of the Avengers, Hulk actually succeeded in lifting Thor's hammer.

However, Hulk has also scored victories over the hammer. He learned long ago that if Thor is holding Mjolnir, Hulk can grab his arm and use the weapon against him, as he did in both Avengers Assemble #4 (Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley) and Hulk: Let the Battle Begin #1 (Jesse Blaze Snider, Steve Kurth.) Hulk's most grisly victory over the enchantment came in Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 (Donny Cates, Martin Coccolo.) When Thor tried to pin Hulk with his hammer, Hulk pushed up and forced the hammer through his body in order to escape being trapped, knowing that his potent healing factor would allow him to survive.

Red Hulk was also able to turn Mjolnir against Thor during a battle in space, capable of wielding the hammer because in zero gravity, 'lifting' the weapon stops having any meaning.

The only time Hulk has truly lifted Mjolnir was in Avengers #3 (Stan Lee, Jack Kirby), when he was able to lift it during a period when the enchantment had been temporarily negated. Other than that - and despite multiple attempts - Hulk has never been able to lift Thor's hammer, with the enchantment judging him unworthy every time. Thankfully for fans of Hulk vs Thor smackdowns, the Jade Giant has learned from his long list of failures, and can now pull off tactics like the one in The Incredible Hulk #25, turning Mjolnir to his advantage even if he can't lift it off the ground.

The Incredible Hulk #25 is available now from Marvel Comics.

Associated with the mythical realm of Asgard, Thor is a Marvel Comics hero who channels the power of thunder to slay their foes. Though the name is chiefly tied to Thor Odinson, several other characters also take on the role of God of Thunder, including Odinson's love interest, Jane Foster. Odin is portrayed as a physically imposing hero with incredible strength and typically wields the dwarven forged hammer, Mjolnir.
