Unlocking characters in Hyper Light Breaker is not the most intuitive process, and there’s nothing that informs players how to get the material they need to do so. It might be frustrating depending on how quickly you want to unlock the other playable characters. However, there is one way to get Abyss Stones, which is what you need to get the full roster of characters under your control.
While there are just three playable characters in Hyper Light Breaker right now, there will continue to be more characters added to the game for players to try out as the Early Access period continues. There are at least 6 more locked spots beyond Lapis and Goro that appear in the game, which means there are at least 6 more planned Breakers to play as. Collecting more Abyss Stones will help you have what you need for the future as well.

Where To Get Abyss Stones
Getting The Material To Get More Characters
Abyss Stones are available specifically from the Crown Boss fights. You must beat a Crown Boss in order to earn an Abyss Stone. While more ways to find them may pop up in the future, right now this is the only known method. You can also only defeat them by collecting prisms from the map.
Some prisms look like they are below ground. If you are near or on top of a yellow dot but there is no sign of a mini-boss, you should look for a nearby building or flat surface. You will need a key to unlock it, but then you can enter the dungeon and clear it.
The prisms are guarded by smaller mini-bosses, and you must get at least 2 in order to get to the first Crown Boss. The Crown fights are not easy, and it is recommended to play in co-op to get the most out of these fights. Otherwise, you may find yourself struggling to survive long enough to defeat them.

Hyper Light Breaker's Overgrowth Explained
The Overgrowth is a new land and an ever-evolving landscape in Hyper Light Breaker that players will try to understand as they play the game.
Once you do finish the fight with a Crown Boss in Hyper Light Breaker, you will earn several rewards. The Abyss Stone is just one of them, as you should also get some decent gear. Then you should leave the area and start a new run, taking advantage of the new gear you acquired. You could switch to a different character, but I would wait until you start a new Cycle, as starting with a different character in the middle of a Cycle might be difficult.
How To Use Abyss Stones To Unlock Characters
Returning To The Hub To Switch Characters
Once you are back at the Hub, also known as the Hotel, you can go back to the telepad and start a run. At this point, when the character select screen pops up, you can scroll over to any character that is currently available. There is a prompt for “Unlock” with the image of an Abyss Stone next to it. All you need to do is use the prompt, and you will spend your Abyss Stone and unlock another character.
Here are the available characters to unlock with a little hint about their abilities so you can choose which one to unlock first:
Unlockable Characters & Abilities |
|
---|---|
Lapis |
Lapis’ stats change based on gameplay mechanics. For instance, Rail Damage increases when you pick up Batteries, and her Warrior SyCom increases after getting an upgrade. |
Goro |
Goro comes with Dual Blades, which is great for players who like fast gameplay. His skills can increase when he uses a Rail, or he can simply increase his Critical Hit. |
Notably, you will effectively have 6 characters by the time you unlock them all. Each character has 2 different SyCom abilities, which change their base stats and what their special powers are. This means that you will be able to mix and match your playstyle and your gear to make the best build you can. However, you will need Golden Rations to unlock the 2nd SyCom, so there is still a long process ahead of you.
Once you understand the process, unlocking characters gets a lot simpler. That being said, beating the bosses is not an easy task, and you will have a long road ahead of you yet. However, once you get past the initial hump, you should start to understand the rhythm of the game and get the gear you need to finish runs. If you are struggling, try going a few runs just going toward the Extraction Point and picking up gear along the way until you have enough to feel comfortable making a run at the bosses in Hyper Light Breaker.
