An evil version of Moon Knight wielding the powers of a cruel god will threaten to descend the Marvel Universe into chaos this December. In this year’s Timeless #1, the Immortal Moon Knight will combine the powers of Iron Man, Khonshu and the Eternals to make the Earth bend to his will.

Announced by Marvel at the “Marvel’s Next Big Thing” at San Diego Comic-Con, Timeless #1 2023 will be written by Collin Kelley and Jackson Lanzing, drawn by Juann Cabal and feature a cover by Kael Ngu. While details about the one-shot remain scarce, it is intended to establish a potential dark future of the Marvel Universe and set up the next year of stories. When an ancient evil arises in the form of the Immortal Moon Knight, the only person who can stand in his way and stop him from destroying the universe is the mysterious Power Man, who has been revealed to be “Earth’s last surviving superhero.”

Immortal Moon Knight's Ancient Evil Threatens the Universe

Kelley and Lanzing hyped up the powers of the mysterious Immortal Moon Knight during the SDCC on Saturday. “Welcome to the dark future of the Marvel Universe,” Kelley said. “At the end of time, one hero remains. He wields the powers of Iron Man, the will of Khonshu and the very machine of the Eternal Earth. He is the Immortal Moon Knight.”

Despite Kelley describing him as a “hero,” Marvel describes this towering new foe as a “nightmare borne of StarkTech, the Eternal Machine, and the God of the Moon” who will usher in a tide of chaos. The exact identity of this daunting figure is unknown. Could it be the best-known Fist of Khonshu, Marc Spector, corrupted and doomed to carry out Khonshu’s will far into the future? Or is it perhaps another fist of Khonshu, like Moon Knight's newfound ally Hunter’s Moon. The fact that this figure will also possess Iron Man technology and the power of the Machine that is Earth (the machine at the center of the planet created by the Eternals) adds another layer to the mystery.

Timeless Sets Up The Final Battle of the Marvel Universe

For the past two years, Marvel has released a one-shot titled Timeless #1 that offers glimpses of the next year of Marvel stories. Timeless #1 2023 will be no different, setting up this dark future and the conflict between the Immortal Moon Knight and Marvel’s “final living hero” Power Man. This hero standing in the way of Earth and Khonshu’s victory possesses the powers of the Hulk, the Sentry and Iron Fist, and he may or may not be a future version of Luke Cage. The conflict is teased to be a dark and deeply personal one between these two figures, one that arises from choices made in the present day and exacerbated by the “hubris of its heroes.” Regardless of what causes this apocalyptic future, it’s going to take all Power Man has in order to save the Marvel Universe from the wrath of the Immortal Moon Knight.

Timeless #1 2023 will be available December 27 from Marvel Comics.
