New Pixar art explains Inside Out 2’s cut emotions. A sequel to the beloved 2015 Pixar film Inside Out, the animated movie tacks on four new emotions — Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui — to a group of characters that already includes the original five emotions of Joy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, and Anger. How that changes things for Riley will be revealed when Inside Out 2 releases on June 14, but director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen have spoken about how previous versions of the movie included several other new emotions.
At a studio visit and press conference attended by Screen Rant, Mann explained that the first screening of Inside Out 2 actually introduced nine new emotions to Riley's head:
But my first , my first screening that we did, nine emotions. Nine new emotions showed up. I really wanted Joy to feel overwhelmed by all of these new emotions that showed up. And I was like well, let’s have a lot show up. And then you couldn’t keep track. There were so many emotions and they all canceled each other out because you couldn’t keep up with everybody. And my first note from the first screening was simplify.
The walls of Pixar were adorned with concept art from throughout the movie's development, and many of the emotions that didn't make the final cut are included. Check out photos of the art below:
These emotions included Shame, which Mann has confirmed, who is possibly visualized by the dark blue figure in the top right of the second and third images. Other labelled emotions include Jealousy and Awe, which are in the art on the bottom and mid-right, respectively, of the middle two images. Most of these emotions are depicted in multiple ways, evidencing the options explored during the creative process. The last image shows a glimpse at Nostalgia, depicted as a kindly old woman.
What Other Emotions Were Cut from Inside Out 2?
Anxiety's Trailer Moment Is Actually A Remnant Of An Earlier Draft
In an effort to “simplify” the film, another major emotion left out was Guilt, with Mann explaining at this same press conference that the team “wanted a giant luggage cart like at a hotel” to symbolize Guilt. Instead of bringing this emotion to the big screen, the Inside Out 2 team decided to saddle Anxiety with this baggage instead. As seen in the Inside Out 2 trailer, Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, has now been given suitcases to carry that represent this mental load.

Inside Out 2 Voice Cast: Every New, Returning & Recast Character
The Inside Out 2 cast is missing some major players from the first film, but the Pixar sequel brings back plenty of iconic voice actors.
In addition to Guilt, Shame, Jealousy, Awe, and Nostalgia, there are clearly a number of other characters present in this concept art. The bottom right corner of the middle two images, for example, features a character with yellow skin, spiky hair, and glasses who gives a dubious look. Given the facial expression, this character might have been Suspicion, which would fit with the alternate versions surrounding it. The figure could have even been something like Stubbornness, a popular teenage state, because the expression on their face could be interpreted as some sort of indignant glance.
Another nixed emotion from Inside Out 2 was Schadenfreude, a German word that refers to the feeling of joy at someone else’s expense. According to the Inside Out 2 team, this was an idea that Pete Docter originally had for the first Inside Out film, but it ended up cut from both. Instead, the team opted for more concrete emotions, eventually settling on Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment after consulting with an expert. Hopefully, these emotions help Inside Out 2 capture the experience of puberty as well as the original did Riley's childhood.

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.
