A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online. I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of. I don’t know if he knew that he was backing me at the time, but it had that effect. And my career did not lose momentum the way it could have if he hadn’t backed me.

Hathaway had her breakout role in 2001, when she played Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. At only 19 years old, Hathaway was an unknown entity at the time of The Princess Diaries’ release. From there, she went on to play a series of princess or princess-adjacent roles, including in Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Since she got her start, Hathaway has gone in and out of being considered an A-list actress. She has been nominated for Oscars twice, for Rachel Getting Married and Les Misérables, winning Best ing Actress for the latter film. On the other side of her career, however, Hathaway had been in goofy roles in movies like Get Smart, Bride Wars, and Love & Other Drugs. So, in the early 2010s, the seriousness with which people in Hollywood treated her career was split.
