Summary
- Interview with the Vampire showrunner Rolin Jones rewrote Louis and Lestat's reunion by focusing on forgiveness and reconciliation, making it stronger than its initial first draft.
- The emotional reunion reflects the show's theme of memory and opens the door for further relationship exploration.
- Forgiveness between Louis and Lestat may impact other characters as season 3, based on The Vampire Lestat, brings new story elements to the show.
Interview with the Vampire season 2 ended with Louis learning that it was Lestat, and not Armand, who had saved him during him and Claudia's trial in the Théâtre des Vampires. The pair end up having an emotional reunion in the final episode, mourning over Claudia's death and making up after everything they had been through. This leaves the door open for further exploration of their relationship moving forward.
Speaking with Collider, however, Jones revealed the initial reunion between Louis and Lestat during Interview with the Vampire season 2 wasn't as heartfelt. The showrunner explained how, after writing the first draft, he worked with actors Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid to make it more about reconciliation, which worked better for the progression of the story. Check out what Jones had to say below:
It was a gun to my head. We had a strike, and we had to chuck out scripts really, really quickly. You're also saving it, right? I know that scene, from the beginning when we took this on, would eventually happen. Three years later, we’re shooting it. Generally speaking, I had Lestat’s track okay. There were some additions I ended up making. When we were finally allowed to come back and start rewriting, I got on the phone with both of them to talk about the scene because it was clear. We were all looking at it, going, "This is not working." It seems so obvious and dumb and so blatant right now, but the scene needed to be about forgiveness and contrition, and it wasn’t coming out of Louis’ mouth the way it should have. I have two really lovely actors who guided me that way, and we got there together.
Why Louis & Lestat's Reunion Is Such A Powerful Finale
While it's unclear if the pair will ever truly get back together romantically since Louis was seen alone in Dubai during the final scene, Interview with the Vampire season 3 could see their relationship heal even more as Lestat's backstory unfolds.
When Louis finally confronts Lestat for the first time in decades, it's clear he feels genuine remorse for everything that happened between them. This is especially the case for Claudia's death, which he realized too late was something he never wanted to see transpire. While it's unclear if the pair will ever truly get back together romantically since Louis was seen alone in Dubai during the final scene, Interview with the Vampire season 3 could see their relationship heal even more as Lestat's backstory unfolds.
On a deeper level, though, their emotional reunion reflects the show's key theme of memory, with the protagonist never realizing his former lover had truly been the one to save him. While their interaction could have ended with certain feelings left unspoken or memories unaddressed, the fact so much is conjured up makes their final embrace all the more important for the story. It also indicates their continued going forward will be vital to the overarching narrative, especially now that both know the truth about what happened during the trial.
Their ability to forgive one another may impact other Interview with the Vampire characters as well, notably Armand, who Louis violently broke up with at the end of season 2. It's possible he'll learn about the pair forgiving one another and potentially getting back together, deciding to go on a path of revenge against them in the process. While the moment of their forgiveness was a vital part of the show, it also sets the stage for much more that's still yet to come.
Interview with the Vampire season 3, based on Anne Rice's book The Vampire Lestat, is currently in production.
