They Follow gets a filming update from one of the original film's stars. It Follows is 2014 horror film about a woman who is followed by a supernatural being after having a sexual encounter one evening. The film is directed by David Robert Mitchell and features a leading cast including Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe, Bailey Spry, and Carollette Phillips. Late last year, a sequel to It Follows titled They Follow was announced.

Per IndieWire, Monroe provides an update on They Follow. According to Monroe, the team will start filming in early 2025. Monroe did not provide further details about the film, noting that there was very little that she could say. Though the early 2025 filming window suggests that They Follow could be arriving sooner rather than later, the film still does not yet have a release date.

How Will They Follow Stack Up Against The Original?

They Follow Will Come Over A Decade After It Follows

With filming not starting until next year, They Follow will come at least a decade after It Follows. This puts the horror film in an interesting position, as it will have to follow up something that is more distant in the audience's memories. The release date gap could also make it such that the sequel loses the momentum that the critically acclaimed It Follows brought a decade ago. The horror movie scored an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and brought in an impressive $21.9 million on a $1 million budget.

They Follow will benefit, however, from the fact that Monroe is a much bigger star than she was when It Follows was released. As her claim-to-fame, It Follows made her career skyrocket, and she has since acted in several films such as Independence Day: Resurgence, The 5th Wave, and The Guest. Her horror work has also proven Monroe to be a certified Scream Queen, as just this year, she will play a major role in the highly-anticipated horror movie Longlegs.

In addition to Monroe reprising her role, They Follow will also see the return of writer-director Mitchell. Mitchell has only directed one feature since his debut with It Follows, helming the divisive A24 title Under the Silver Lake in 2018. They Follow will be an exciting chance for the director to show his horror chops once again. Hopefully, he can pull off a follow-up to his much-loved original film.
