It Follows 2 is officially happening under a new title, with Maika Monroe set to reprise her role. Hitting theaters in 2015, David Robert Mitchell's unsettling horror flick stars Monroe as Jay, a young woman who finds herself followed by a sinister, murderous force after a sexual encounter. It Follows earned very positive reviews from critics and was a success at the box office.
Now, per a new report from Deadline, an It Follows sequel called They Follow is in the works. Production company NEON shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, confirming the news, including the ominous tagline: "It's everywhere."
The film will see Mitchell and Monroe re-team, with an early 2024 production start date eyed. NEON will produce the picture with Good Fear Content.
How They Follow Could Continue Jay's Story
The It Follows Ending Features A Big Clue
It Follows features a novel premise, with a malevolent entity attached to different characters until they have sex, with it then being ed on to someone else. The shape-shifting force relentlessly pursues its victims, murdering them in gruesome fashion if it catches them. The ending to the movie features Jay having sex with Paul (Keir Gilchrist), ing on the It Follows entity that was haunting her throughout the movie to him.
With Paul knowing he's now in danger, the It Follows ending sees him driving by prostitutes on a street corner, suggesting that he will the entity on to one of them. The final scene of the film sees Jay and Paul walking down the street together, but it's not clear if they've actually rid themselves of the malevolent force, with someone shown walking slowly down the sidewalk behind them. A sequel, then, already has a strong jumping off point, with Jay and Paul once more facing off against the entity, having not rid themselves of it to begin with.
Another potential option for the sequel would be to follow new characters dealing with the entity before they ultimately trace it back to Jay. Jay, then, could contribute her knowledge and expertise to these new characters regarding how to maybe destroy the entity once and for all. With It Follows 2 still months away from starting production, many questions remain, but the original remains a clever and utterly chilling movie, making a sequel an exciting prospect.
