Warning! This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 9.

Severance season 2, episode 4's ending and that everything before this was Helena or the Lumon CEO's continued efforts at wooing Mark, the show has cast a greater light on a central figure of the family.

Beyond that, though, the other Eagan family remain an interesting, albeit weird, mystery. Jame Eagan was seen briefly in Severance's cast of characters go, Jame is by far the most strangely compelling, furthered by his egg scene with Helena in season 2, episode 9.

Severance Season 1 Revealed That Drinking 3 Raw Eggs With Milk Was Kier Eagan's Favorite Breakfast

In Contrast To His Descendant, Helena

The scene comes right at the beginning of Severance season 2, episode 9, and showcases Helena eating hard-boiled eggs for breakfast. Helena asks Jame if he is going to eat too, to which he strangely replies that he will watch. Jame does as he says and watches her eat for a while before stating, "I wish you'd take them raw." The wording of this phrase alone makes this an incredibly off-putting thing to say to one's daughter - as was his insult earlier in the season - but it actually links back to a small detail from Severance season 1.

Why Helena's Father Called Her A "Fetid Moppet" In Severance Season 2

Helena’s father, Jame Eagan, has a small cameo in Severance season 2, episode 2, in which he calls her a strange insult and leaves: what does it mean?

1

In season 1, episode 2, Mr. Milchick tells Helly that Mr. Eagan drinks raw eggs with milk as this is his favorite breakfast, likely referencing Severance's enigmatic Kier Eagan. Looking back on this scene now, it was likely a test to see whether Helena's severance boundaries were holding or whether she would recognize her family's favorite morning meal. This somewhat explains why Jame expressed his desire for Helena to eat raw eggs too, as this could be part of a long-standing Eagan tradition dating back to Kier, and he wants her to be more like the founder.

Why Does Jame Eagan Moan When Watching Helena Eat Her Eggs?

Jame's Displeasure Is Clear

Shortly before Jame tells Helena of his desire for her to eat raw eggs, he can be heard audibly whining when Helena takes her first bite. Despite trying to converse with her father about Lumon, Jame is paying no interest in anything other than her breakfast habits, as evidenced by the moan he elicits. Concerning why exactly he makes this noise, it is seemingly one of displeasure. The whine seems to be one of almost pain, drawn out by Helena cutting into and eating her hard-boiled eggs.

This sense of pain likely comes from Helena's differences from Jame and, thus, Kier. If Kier did begin an Eagan tradition of raw eggs and milk for breakfast that Jame has followed to the letter, he will undoubtedly not approve of Helena breaking this. Helena is very different from Jame and the more fanatical followers of the Eagan family, even leading her to it she is ashamed of herself to Mark in Severance season 2, episode 4. Helena is unafraid to break Eagan norms, something that rubs Jame the wrong way if his moan is anything to go by.

Helena's pursuit of a seemingly monogamous romantic relationship with Mark also seems to differ from Eagan norms, with season 2, episode 9 implying that Jame has had other children with severed people.

Jame's moan could also have been a tactic of manipulation. Lumon is a darkly manipulative company that utilizes several different methods to coerce people into doing what it desires, driven by the goals of the Eagans. This was proven in Severance season 2, episode 9's ending with Lumon trying to manipulate Mark into returning to work and finishing Cold Harbor, which he likely would have done already without his Reintegration. Jame's moan was likely meant to make Helena feel uncomfortable, potentially so much so that she changes her eating habits to align with the founder's vision.

Helena & Jame's Egg Scene Subtly s A Big Mark & Helly Theory

What makes this egg scene in Severance season 2, episode 9 all the more interesting is how it subtly teases a big Mark and Helly/Helena theory. Throughout Severance season 2, Mark has had sexual encounters with both Helena and Helly, though the former tricked him into it by claiming to be the latter. Regardless, these multiple encounters have led many to theorize that Severance is setting up a pregnancy with Mark and Helly/Helena as the parents.

Severance season 2, episode 9's egg scene could have teased exactly this. When concerning symbolic storytelling, eggs are usually a sign of fertility given that animals lay eggs to reproduce. With this meaning in mind, the intense focus on Helena eating an egg - something that may be Eagan tradition but has never been shown before - could hint to the audience that this theory is correct and she has conceived a baby with Mark in either season 2, episode 4 or season 2, episode 6.

The Real Meaning Of Helena & Jame Eagan's Egg Scene In Severance Season 2 Episode 9 Explained

Helena's Egg Preferences Are Very Symbolic

Aside from the aforementioned deeper potential meanings of the scene, Helena and Jame's egg moment could have even more symbolic weight. For one, the idea of the Eagans eating eggs and nothing else for breakfast enforces how strangely ritualistic and cult-like the family is. Most people would have supplemental foods like toast or bacon with eggs for breakfast or even make them into an omelet. Eating solely a boiled egg, or, indeed, raw eggs, alone highlights the notable differences in how the Eagan family operates.

Finally, eggs are often synonymous with the idea of new life and rebirth, not just fertility. In this case, rebirth and new life can be linked to Severance via the Innies and Outies. The mere fact that Innies are possible in Severance ties to new life, as this concept allows someone to essentially start a new life, even if they cannot it.

In the same vein, the Innie's being created links to the symbolism of new life. Moreover, Severance season 2, episode 7 explored how Lumon is trying to create several Innies in one person, Gemma. This also links to new life, as Lumon's plans are essentially creating exactly that. Overall, Severance season 2, episode 9's egg scene is not simply a strange depiction of the Eagans but holds plenty of wider meaning for the show.
