An Amazon studio executive shares an update on the casting timeline and franchise status of 26th Bond film is set to reinvent the franchise with a new leading star. Several names have been floated in the process, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill, but the studio has not yet decided who will play the next 007 agent. The most recent film was No Time To Die, which was released in 2021. This film was the last Bond appearance by Daniel Craig, with the search for a new actor to take over the mantle.

In an interview with The Guardian, Amazon MGM studios executive Jennifer Salke addressed the status of the James Bond franchise. While she didn't "want too much time between films," the executive is also "not concerned at this point." Salka also called some of the casting ideas "interesting." Check out the full quote from Salke below:

There are a lot of ideas [about potential actors] that have popped up that I thought are interesting. I think there are a lot of different ways we can go. We have a good and close relationship with Eon and Barbara and Michael. We are not looking to disrupt the way those wonderful films are made. For us, we are taking their lead.

The global audience will be patient. We don’t want too much time between films, but we are not concerned at this point.

What This Update Means For Bond 26's Release Timeline

Bond 26 Is Still Early In Development

Salke's comments suggest that little progress has been made in developing Bond 26. This update is not far from when franchise producer Barbara Broccoli responded to the franchise's progress in February 2024, saying, "Nothing is happening yet." Still, several rumors have floated online, including that Taylor-Johnson was secretly offered the Bond role, although the actor has refused to address whether that's true. On top of that, some directors have reportedly been sought to helm Bond 26, but even those speculations are dubious. Thus, it seems unlikely that the new era will start anytime soon due to the time it's taking to reinvent the franchise.

Along with James Bond, there have been a dozen characters who've been given the 007 designation in the long-running spy franchise.

As it stands, Bond 26 will have one of the largest release gaps in the James Bond franchise in recent history. Since 2000, the longest gap between two Bond films was four years. There was a changeover between Bond actors, as Pierce Brosnan's Die Another Day came in 2002, four years before Craig's takeover in 2006's Casino Royale. Even if the next Bond is confirmed this month, production will take time, so Bond 26 will not come until at least 2026 or 2027, which would create at least a five-year gap.

In addition to the timeline updates, it is interesting to hear Salke's input about the casting of the next Bond actor. Specifically, I'm intrigued by her idea that "there are a lot of different ways" the franchise could go. Broccoli previously indicated casting requirements for the next 007, which included a younger actor in his late 20s or early 30s, who would be committed to several films. These requirements indicate a certain demographic of actors to play Bond, but Salke's comments indicate that the studio and producers are actively looking at choices for the next 007.
