DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn responded to fan concerns regarding reports that his film, the DC Extended Universe franchise was canceled.

Recently, the Hollywood Reporter shared that the production would be refilming in Los Angeles this week. As a result, a fan reached out to Gunn on Threads to the news.

Per Gunn, the rumors are "sort of" true, but the reports are missing context and exaggerating by referring to the filming as lasting "a few days." The director explained: "We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film." Pickup shots are typically short supplementary material filmed to augment existing scenes rather than to replace them.

Whar James Gunn's Superman Filming Comments Mean

As Gunn more or less stated, filming additional pickup shots is not the same as redoing portions of Superman. There is no cause for alarm because the need for pickup shots usually indicates more of a need to smooth out the final cut of the film than any sort of creative trouble behind the scenes.

After a new update, the first trailer for James Gunn's Superman movie could have an exciting date that would be fitting for the DCU's debut film.

Moreover, these kinds of shoots are much less involved than standard filming, hence why only a day and a half is needed. Gunn could be addressing an error in the original iteration of the scene, providing coverage of the environment or bystanders, or any number of continuity-related elements.

Our Take on James Gunn's Superman Filming Comments

Though reshoots often have a negative connotation, filming additional coverage is a standard part of the movie-making process. Often times, directors and editors don't realize that a scene will need further content until after it is shot. Unfortunately, DC films - and superhero films in general - have often been victims of creative retooling via reshoots.

Perhaps the most infamous instance of this is 2017's Justice League, which went on to be panned by fans and critics in large part due to the clashing tones caused by a change in direction later in production. As such, it's natural that hearing Superman is undergoing reshoots may give audiences pause. Gunn's reassurance puts fans at ease that production on Superman is still going as planned, which is especially helpful given DC's rocky history with reshoots.
