Statham’s Spy Is A Reminder Of How Fun Action Stars Can Be In Comedy Movies
Jason Statham Plays An Overly-Confident Rogue CIA Agent In Spy
While Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are often viewed as more niche comedy films, Spy was a mainstream comedy blockbuster that completely changed how audiences view Statham. In Spy, written and directed by Paul Feig, Susan Cooper (McCarthy) is a CIA analyst who embarks on her first undercover mission to stop the sale of a nuclear bomb. In the 2015 film, Statham plays Rick Ford, a rogue CIA agent who doesn't trust that Susan can pull off the mission, so he decides to take matters into his own hands.
The banter between Statham and McCarthy is hilarious in Spy, and showcases a completely different side of Statham. Prior to Spy, Statham was always viewed as a capable action star, so it is completely believable that he is a CIA agent. However, Statham turns the intensity up and continuously reveals more and more absurd (and hysterical) stories about his career as a spy. In reality, Statham's character messes up the mission more than McCarthy's in the film, which is a fun reversal of the character-type he usually plays.
Jason Statham’s Hollywood Idols All Did Their Fair Share Of Comedy Movies
Statham Idolizes Stallone and Schwarzenegger
Seeing how well-received Statham was in a comedy film like Spy was amazing, since he was following in the footsteps of several of his Hollywood idols. Years before Statham became one of the biggest action stars in the world, actors like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger made the transition from action movie stardom to comedy films. While Stallone had a much rockier run of comedy films, such as Oscar and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot You, Schwarzenegger made several beloved comedies, like Twins and Kindergarten Cop.
Since Spy is Statham's highest-rated movie of all time, exploring the comedy genre clearly paid off for the actor, and proved that he should star in more comedies in the future.
