Jay and Silent Bob's Onscreen History Explained

Jay and Silent Bob have become the de facto mascots of the View Askewniverse, which is the name for the loosely connected universe in which Smith's movies take place. The duo - which features the tall and talkative Jay paired with the quiet and unassuming Silent Bob - were just minor characters in the original Clerks, though their intriguing personalities drew the attention of audiences. In addition to appearances in Clerks and its two sequels, the pair have been featured in almost every other Askewniverse title.

Between the release of Clerks and the time the Jay and Silent Bob movies began, giving them their first starring roles, the duo had already appeared in 1995's Mallrats, 1997's Chasing Amy, and 1999's Dogma. From there, their empire only grew, with appearances in the tie-in projects Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie! and Clerks: The Animated Series, as well as a variety of comic books and video games.
