Outside of being two of Shōnen Jump’s biggest manga, one of the similarities between Dragon Ball is in their power systems - both series feature characters with innate abilities that allow them to perform extraordinary feats. It is through that similarity that Dragon Ball offers a plausible explanation for Jujutsu Kaisen's most controversial moment. A little over a year ago, Jujutsu Kaisen fans finally got the fight they’d been waiting for since the series began. Satoru Gojo – the current greatest sorcerer in the world, faced off against Ryomen Sukuna - the greatest sorcerer of all time.
Interestingly, the fight lived up to the hype that had steadily been building over the six years since their first encounter. The fight stretched out over ten chapters and several months “in real time”. But then, in the blink of an eye, Gojo’s Infinity technique and sliced him - literally - in half. It was a shocking end to one of the greatest characters in manga and anime history.
Dragon Ball Rescues A Surprising Jujutsu Kaisen Death
The way Sukuna killed Gojo is not as bizarre as first thought.
Naturally, fans were shocked by Gojo's death and more than a little skeptical of how it came about. Gojo's defeat was even more stunning because he was dominating the battle and had activated his Infinity technique - his personal defense system that had been heavily hyped throughout the series as being impervious to anything. However, Sukuna's fatal blow defied the fundamental laws of nature, suring even the extraordinary abilities of modern Jujutsu sorcery. This move was unprecedented and contradicted the rules of the series' magical world. As a result, many fans felt that Gojo's death was an unearned and unsatisfying plot twist, leaving the impression that the creator had lost interest in the story.
Enter Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the 2018 movie that delves into the story of the mythical Super Saiyan Broly. In the film, after being unable to defeat Broly on their own, Goku and Vegeta decide that their most effective strategy is to merge their abilities in a fusion attack. Once fused, the new entity, Gogeta, confronts Broly with an unprecedented fierceness. In their battle, Gogeta and Broly reach unimaginable levels of power, causing chaos in the universe. Their fierce exchanges are so intense that they repeatedly tear through the fabric of the space-time continuum. Dragon Ball’s Broly-Gogeta fight illustrates that the idea of Sukuna’s multidimensional attack is neither new, nor surprising for characters operating at such high levels of expertise, ability, and power.
Dragon Ball Super's Reality Bending Attacks Explain How Sukuna Really Beat Gojo
Sukuna's Attacks Were So Strong That They Could Bend The Laws Of Physics That Protected Gojo
Broly proves that Sukuna’s strike is not as far-fetched as Jujutsu Kaisen fans may believe. Like the fight between Gojo and Sukuna, the battle between Gogeta and Broly also left more than a few questions about the capacity of characters to reach such unbelievable levels that they could bend the laws of nature. In Broly, the suggestion is that such feats are to be expected from those who have reached the pinnacle of strength and skill. To avoid defeat or death, Broly and Gogeta kept raising their power level until the impossible became possible. The film demonstrated that when the powerful characters in a manga face off against one another - space and time are nothing more than props to be manipulated by their will.
In his fight with Gojo, Sukuna was mere minutes away from being obliterated. Like Broly and Gogeta, he had to attempt the impossible— something only a sorcerer of his ability could have done. Despite not knowing if his technique would work, he could not fault himself for losing to a sorcerer of Gojo's caliber. The more intriguing question - however - is why Gojo failed to anticipate Sukuna's strike. Once again, the Broly-Gogeta fight offers insight: it highlights Gojo’s lack of understanding of Sukuna’s abilities – just like Gogeta failed to understand Broly’s abilities. Gojo, like Gogeta, should have anticipated that at such high levels of power, the winner would need to transcend ordinary fighting or sorcery skills. It’s a misunderstanding that led to Broly's catastrophic rampage in Dragon Ball and Gojo’s death in Jujutsu Kaisen.
