Summary

  • Gojo's Limitless technique distorts space, making him untouchable in battles against cursed spirits.
  • Despite being unmatched so far, Gojo was defeated by Sukuna thanks to Mahoraga's adaptability and Sukuna's intellect.
  • Limitless reflects Gojo's isolation and identity as the strongest sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, shaping his character arc in the series.

Among the many formidable jujutsu sorcerers in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo stands out as the indisputable master of the Limitless technique. Gojo is frequently considered Jujutsu Kaisen's strongest sorcerer, and a key part of that is his access to the ridiculously powerful Limitless technique.

Akin to the Six Eyes, Limitless is an inherited technique ed down within the Gojo family and works best in conjunction with the Six Eyes. Unlike other of his clan, Gojo is an incredibly rare individual who was born with both Limitless and the Six Eyes, and his ability to use both abilities has given him the reputation of the strongest sorcerer in modern day.

Gojo's Limitless Makes Him Jujutsu Kaisen's Strongest Sorcerer

Gojo fires Hollow Purple in Jujutsu Kaisen

Gojo explains the concept of Infinity by stating that a convergence of infinite series prevents an opponent from hitting him directly, as the blow ends up hitting infinity itself. This directly mirrors the Achilles Paradox, wherein the Greek hero is theoretically unable to catch a tortoise due to the infinite amounts of finite space separating the two. Limitless also makes any force attempting to penetrate infinity slows down to the point of halting in its entirety. Gojo is also able to wield the Cursed Technique Lapse, or Blue, and the Cursed Technique Reversal, or Red, which give him powerful ranged attacks.

Blue generates the power of attraction and cursed energy output; Gojo can use this to assault people with intense gravitational force, or he can use it on himself to move at super speed which, in turn, can make his physical attacks move fast enough to hit with incredible force. In contrast, Red allows him to reverse the effects and hit people with an intense force of repulsion, the effects of which are just as deadly. Blue and Red can also be combined into Hollow Purple, a massive blast of pure destructive energy that annihilates everything in its path, and it serves as Gojo's strongest regular technique in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo's Domain Expansion Explained

Gojo opens his domain expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen

Beyond the regular applications of Limitless, of course, is Gojo's Domain Expansion, Unlimited Void. Gojo's Domain Expansion assaults his opponents with unlimited knowledge that leaves them catatonic and allows Gojo to finish them off in an instant, and thanks to the Six Eyes reducing his cursed energy consumption to virtually nothing, Gojo is able to use Unlimited Void multiple times in a row before exhausting himself. Even with all that, Gojo still lost to Sukuna thanks to his utilization of Mahoraga, but his mastery of Limitless still served to make Gojo the strongest modern-day sorcerer in all of Jujutsu Kaisen.

How Gojo Was Defeated in Jujutsu Kaisen Despite Limitless

Mahoraga Was Able to By Limitless

In theory, Limitless makes Gojo all but untouchable. However, Sukuna managed to sidestep this inviolability using none other than Mahoraga. The Ten Shadows played a key role in shifting the tide of the battle against Gojo in the latter half and Mahoraga's ability to adapt to Limitless is what ultimately helped Sukuna defeat Gojo.

Instead of targeting Gojo and being stopped by Limitless, Sukuna instead targeted the very space Gojo occupied, cutting space-time or rather cutting the world itself in two. Subsequent chapters explained that Sukuna had to undertake a binding vow in order to broaden the scope of the slash but nonetheless, the move proves that Sukuna outsmarted Gojo in the end.

If not for Mahoraga and the Ten Shadows it is unlikely that Sukuna would have found another way to get around Limitless. Before Gojo's death was revealed in chapter #236, fans were all but sure of Gojo's victory, as Sukuna seemed to have taken the brunt of Hollow Purple. Had Mahoraga not been present, the battle would likely have come to an end not long after. Even if Sukuna managed to unleash Divine Flame, it is doubtful whether its incinerating heat would be able to by Limitless.

Why Limitless is the Perfect Power for Gojo

Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo resurrects himself against a backdrop of gold.

There is no doubt that the Limitless technique is what has placed Gojo at the zenith of the jujutsu world as the strongest sorcerer humanity has to offer. However, with this overwhelming power has come great isolation. Gojo's strength, which created an imbalance in the world when he was born, has also become a barrier between him and the rest of the world, including his peers. In a way, Limitless represents this aspect of Gojo's character rather poetically.

Gojo's position as the strongest has defined his identity from the very start, so much so that he often finds it difficult to understand his fellow sorcerers or relate to them. As such, Limitless not only creates infinite distance between himself and his enemies, but also forms a metaphorical barrier between Gojo and the world, both socially and emotionally. Very few have been able to breach this distance and get to know Gojo for who he really is in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Still, it is difficult to envision Gojo without Limitless and his overwhelming strength. Surely, Gojo would have been a starkly different character without the technique, but it is hard to imagine a power more fitting for the arc he undergoes in Jujutsu Kaisen. More importantly, Limitless is what makes Gojo the iconic, overpowered, cocky yet lovable teacher everyone knows him as, and though he may be long gone, his legacy will live on both in Jujutsu Kaisen and among his devoted fans.
