Warning! Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 222!

With Jujutsu Kaisen's climactic fight between Gojo and Sukuna fast approaching, the series has given its ultimate antagonist a major upgrade. The manga by Gege Akutami had already established Sukuna as one of its most dangerous entities, which makes this upgrade even scarier. However, this was in many ways inevitable given it has been foreshadowed since the very first chapter of the series.

Chapter 222, translated by John Werry, shows how various characters prepare for the ultimate clash between Gojo and Sukuna. In order to give Sukuna as much power as possible, Uraume tracks down most of the King of Curses' remaining fingers. These fingers each contain a portion of Sukuna's power and are what enabled him to possess Yuji at the beginning of the manga. Uraume is able to find all but one of the fingers, which Sukuna speculates means that Gojo is holding onto the final one. However, he is luckily able to compensate for this by eating the mummified corpse of his original body that Kenjaku found in Chapter 220.

Sukuna Powers Up Before Jujutsu Kaisen's Climactic Clash

This is a disgusting powerup, but it makes perfect sense in the context of the rest of the series. Before the Shibuya Incident and Culling Game arcs, one of the main driving goals of the series was for Yuji to eat all of Sukuna's fingers, which were causing havoc around Japan. Each of these fingers made Sukuna stronger and thus more difficult for Yuji to contain, but he was able to do so anyways. Now that Sukuna is in Megumi's body, however, each new finger and body part eaten makes Sukuna an even more overwhelming force that Megumi can't possibly overcome. This will make him an even harder threat for Gojo to overcome.

Of course, given Gojo's absurd strength and abilities, this still may not be enough for Sukuna to defeat him. Gojo recently to Jujutsu Kaisen returned after being unsealed from the prison realm, but based on the brief clash he had with Sukuna and Kenjaku after he came back he still seems as strong as ever. Gojo's Limitless ability is nearly impossible to overcome and even at full strength Sukuna will likely have a tough time defeating him. Thus, in order to make the final fight interesting, Sukuna has needed to get some major upgrades despite how powerful he is.

Sukuna's New Upgrade May Let Him Defeat Gojo

In many ways Jujutsu Kaisen's story since Sukuna assumed his terrifying new form has been devoted to raising Sukuna's power to an adequate level to allow him to compete with Gojo. Worryingly for the protagonists, this may be a sign that Sukuna will win his fight with Gojo, which would force the other much weaker heroes to take him down. No matter who ultimately defeats Sukuna though, his latest upgrade will make it much harder as he is now potentially Jujutsu Kaisen's most powerful character.
