What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #5

Kafka finally s the Defense Force, completing his lifelong dream

In Kaiju No. 8 episode #5, “ing Up!”, while Kafka’s scores normally wouldn't be good enough for a ing grade, vice-captain Hoshina noted that Kafka's knowledge of Kaiju weaknesses could be a valuable asset, and he also thought he was funny. Because of that, both Kafka and Reno managed to enter the Defense Force, although Kafka only became a cadet instead of a full-fledged soldier.

After Kikoru talked Kafka out of telling the Defense Force about his Kaiju powers by pointing out how they would experiment on him, Kafka began his new career in earnest. Naturally, Kafka fell far below Reno and the rest of his peers, but Kafka’s personality and determination still let him befriend everyone, and Hoshina was equally impressed with Kafka’s desire to take his place as Mina’s partner. Hoshina did advise Kafka not to get too attached to anyone in their line of work, however, and as if to emphasize that point, Kafka’s team was called out for their first mission.

Kaiju No. 8 Episode #5 Emphasizes Mina’s Role In The Story

Kafka's childhood friend has been solidified as one of the series' most important characters

Mina in episode 5

While Kaiju No. 8 episode #5 was more of a breather episode than anything, it did a good job of emphasizing Mina’s role in the story. Earlier episodes already established Mina as a top-class soldier, but the reveal that Kafka's friends all ed the Defense Force because Mina inspired them does a great job of further emphasizing how much work Kafka has to do to stand on even ground with her. That, of course, will hardly be an easy process, but it will be nice to see how it plays out in future episodes of the Kaiju No. 8 anime.

Be sure to watch Kaiju No. 8 episode #6 when it releases on Saturday, May 18.
