Summary

  • Director Matthew Vaughn plans to create a larger spy universe akin to Marvel that includes the Kingsman franchise and the film Argylle, with a potential for exciting crossovers.
  • Vaughn already has plans for Argylle 2 and teases a third spy franchise as well.
  • Tonally, it's not hard to see how Kingsman and Argylle could cross over, and Vaughn's work thus far demonstrates that his vision for the spy movie genre would work well for a larger, interconnected universe.

spy romp starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sam Rockwell.

Now, with the Argylle release date still months away and news on Kingsman: The Blue Blood hard to come by, Vaughn reveals in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he has plans for a larger spy universe.

The director teases further expansions to the Argylle franchise, along with some exciting crossovers down the line. Check out Vaughn's full comment below:

“Argylle, as I said, we’ve got the book coming out, and we have an Argylle 2 planned. So, there is a universe and what we’re trying to do with Marv is sort of Marvel to superheroes, we want to be spies as well. So we’ve got Kingsman on the right, Argylle’s on the left, and then we’ve got an idea for something in the middle as well. Then you’ve got these sort of competing franchises in a galaxy that one day might meet.”

Why A Kingsman Spy Universe Is A Great Idea

Colin Firth as Harry Hart in Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle

The first Kingsman movie came as something of a pleasant surprise in 2014, introducing audiences to a world that at once feels very familiar, but fresh and exciting as well. The movie is clearly heavily inspired by James Bond, but it subverts tropes of the 007 franchise and generally just generally is far more over-the-top, violent, and comedic.

The sequel, while not quite as well received, further expanded the universe in some interesting ways, including the introduction of the American Statesman intelligence agency. The King's Man, Vaughn's 2021 prequel, ended up disappointing critically and commercially, but it showed Vaughn's clear ambitions for the franchise and demonstrated just how expansive he envisions the Kingsman world being. Vaughn has plans not only for The King's Man 2, but Kingsman: The Blue Blood, the conclusion to Eggsy's story.

From what trailers have shown, Argylle appears to feature a tone not dissimilar to Vaughn's original spy franchise. While seemingly a little more family friendly, it's already not difficult to see how Argylle and Kingsman could intersect. It's not clear what the third franchise Vaughn is referring to could be, but the introduction of the Statesman certainly seems like a set up for additional franchise expansion.
