This year mark's the 30th anniversary of the Kirby series and as well as Kirby and the Forgotten Land being a success with gamers and critics earlier this year, he will also have his very own music festival later in the summer. And with Nintendo Switch Online hosting some classic Kirby titles, fans have plenty of reasons to celebrate the pink, loveable sphere.
But despite fans having a lot of love about Kirby and his games, not everyone shares the same feelings and has expressed their own opinions that may seem unpopular. From specific copy abilities to under-appreciated entries, these are just some unpopular opinions expressed on Reddit.
The Hammer Ability Is Overrated
Debuting alongside other abilities in Kirby's Adventure on the NES back in 1993, the hammer ability has remained one of the most familiar power-ups throughout the Kirby series. No matter which Kirby game fans have played, they would undoubtedly have used it on more than one occasion to smash opponents away.
But according to Redditor BioLuminescentSpirit, they have shown that they don't quite love this particular recurring ability. They thought that "Hammer is overrated" and while it didn't spark a huge outrage in the comment section, it did spark others to share their least favorite abilities from the series as well.
Amazing Mirror Needs A Remake
It may not be the most celebrated game within the Kirby series by fans, but it did try to introduce some new gameplay mechanics and features in the series back in 2004. It was the first entry in the series to use multiplayer co-op and the play style was similar to Metroidvania titles compared to his traditional platforming adventures. And these mechanics were enough to see it as one of the best-ranked Kirby games on Metacritic, even if some fans still think the game is overrated.
Some of the comments showed that they thought Kirby and the Amazing Mirror was not the best game throughout the series and favored other titles. But Metroid Dread on the Nintendo Switch, maybe a return to this Metroidvania Kirby game might not be the worst idea.
Dark Nebula Should Return
Released on the DS in 2006, Kirby: Squeak Squad (or Kirby: Mouse Attack) introduced a new group of enemies called the Squeaks, a group of thieving rodents led by caped magician Daroach. And yet he and his minions would not end up as the climactic final boss. That honor went to Dark Nebula, a black evil star who was accidentally freed during Kirby's quest for his stolen slice of cake.
As shared in the comment section of NoAltBruh, Protothumb thinks that "Dark Nebula should be in future games." While the character's simple design may be the reason why it has not been as memorable as King Dedede or Meta Knight. While the character has cameoed in other games in the form of collectibles, this strange yet menacing threat has yet to return.
Planet Robobot Was A Bad Game
There are many Nintendo 3DS games that have become some of the best that everyone should try. Kirby: Planet Robobot was released on the 3DS in 2016 and to this day, many still praise the game, despite not quite making it to the top spot on everyone's list of 3DS games. It does, however, currently hold a score of 81 on the Metacritic website.
One comment did stand out from NoAltBruh's post. BeanyTA thought that out of the "mainline games, Planet Robobot is by far the worst one." It looks like not even Kirby in an adorable mech could convince everyone to enjoy this unique entry and is certainly one of the more unpopular opinions seen on Reddit.
Squeak Squad Was A Great Game
Returning to Squeak Squad on the DS, this has remained one of the games that received average scores and reviews on its release. Several publications scored the game with average ratings and Metacritic currently scores the game with 71.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its small group of fans, as expressed in Redditor Dream Course's comment section on his post. PomTron believes that "Squeak Squad is an incredible game that deserves far more praise for all the things it bought to the series, and bought back to the series." It may not be everyone's favorite among his DS offerings, but there are a few who still enjoy what it had to offer.
Kirby's Epic Yarn Was Charming
Originally released on the Wii in 2010 before being ported to the 3DS in 2019, Kirby's Epic Yarn was certainly one of the most visually unique games on the consoles. But some fans weren't on board with its charms and easy gameplay.
While some gamers have expressed their reasons for disliking the game such as its lack of difficulty, mrolivine commented on this on Dream Course's post. "Epic Yarn is one of the best Kirby games. There's way too much hate for it for no reason." It looks like not everyone can meet eye to eye on this particular title, but at least Nintendo gave it a second chance on the handheld console market.
Kirby Is Better Than Mario
Seen as one of the greatest video game companies of all time, Nintendo has created a number of franchises and characters that have stood the test of time. And while Super Mario has become the mascot of the company and starred in some of the greatest games of all time, some believe that Kirby deserves the same level of love.
In a post by most overpowered fighter in Super Smash Bros. Kirby was "one of my fave characters to fight with" in the Super Smash Bros. games and they believe that his games are "all different and unique." While Kirby is popular, it's arguable that he doesn't quite match up to Mario in number of fans and many would defend the plumber against this Redditor's comment.
Kirby 64 Was Unique
Kirby's first foray into the 3D landscape saw critics in the year 2000 feeling mixed about Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. From the lack of difficulty to the short story mode, the game today holds a score of 77 on Metacritic based on reviews and scores at the time and years later.
According to Trench-Coat_Squirrel, who commented on Flasman512's post, "Kirby 64 was also a unique game from what I ." This particular 64 game may not have been seen as among the greatest at the time of its release, but it did try to bring something new in the 3D space back in 2000.
The Parasol Was A Great Ability
Another ability that was introduced in Kirby's Adventure on the NES, the parasol ability was used to hit enemies while also seeing Kirby slowly float down from falling off platforms. The ability grew over time to become more useful, including the ability to cover you and your allies from rushing water and falling rocks.
But being left out in some entries, including the recent Kirby and the Forgotten Land on the Nintendo Switch, some fans still have a love for this odd ability. This included abilities that Redditors wanted to see in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
Bandana Dee Is Overrated
Within [deleted]'s post, many fans have shared their unpopular opinions about the characters and games from the Kirby series. Among them was Iko_Matt0rr, who shared a detailed list of their own thoughts, one of which involved Bandana Dee.
"I don't like Bandana Dee, I see him as a cheap character, like a recolor, and I think that his role should have been taken by other characters instead." First becoming a playable character in Kirby's Return to Dream Land on the Wii in 2011, why particularly a Waddle Dee became a placeholder for multiplayer carnage remains a mystery.
