Author George R.R. Martin talks about a possible title change for the Game of Thrones spinoff series, which is currently under a working title, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Based on the events from Martin's The Tales of Dunk & Egg, it follows a legendary knight and his squire as they embark on adventures in the seven kingdoms. The events are set 90 years before the events in Game of Thrones. The show is adapted from the novella, The Hedge Knight, which is the first of three novellas in the collection of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin revealed in his blog post that they're not set on the title of the show. They are exploring the possibilities of both titles, but haven't reached a decision. There's a high chance that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is "going to be the title of the show," "unless we go with THE HEDGE KNIGHT." However, the author isn't entirely certain since everything is "still under discussion." Check out what Martin wrote below:

"Yes, I am talking about the newest GAME OF THRONES spinoff show. It’s an adaptation of 'The Hedge Knight,' the first of my Dunk & Egg stories. There were two more after that, 'The Sworn Sword' and 'The Mystery Knight.' They have all been collected in a book called A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS. That’s probably going to be the title of the show as well… unless we go with THE HEDGE KNIGHT. That’s still under discussion."

What Martin's Comment Means For The Game Of Thrones Spinoff

The Show Might Get A Different Name

Martin's comment implies a level of uncertainty around the show's working title. While it's not unheard of for a show to receive a change in title while in post-production, the talk about a title change means that either name is a perfect fit for the Dunk & Egg story. With promotional efforts already made with the current name, a talk about a title change also suggests that the show might not use either.

The new Game of Thrones spinoff has already been praised by George R.R. Martin, suggesting it won't have the same issues as House of the Dragon.

It's not the first time a television adaptation has decided on a different name other than that used in the source material. House of the Dragon chose a different name other than Fire & Blood. Game of Thrones also preferred to use the title of the first book in the series rather than using the series title A Song of Ice and Fire to appeal to the different demography. Based on what Martin wrote, it's possible that the show might end up getting a different title.

Our Take on The New Show's Title

It Needs A Better Name

The Greens of House of the Dragon, Aegon, Aemond, Helaena, Alicent, and Otto.

While "Dunk & Egg" as a title doesn't appeal to Martin because it makes the show sound like a sitcom, it does reflect the theme better. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight follows the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight from Flea Bottom, and the future King Aegon V Targaryen, who decides to shave his head and run away from his family.

Ultimately, the show is about both Dunk and Egg. Given that neither "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" nor "The Hedge Knight" reflects the story, it might be why it's been hard to determine the show's title. Though there's only a slim chance that the new series will come out as Dunk & Egg, given how much Martin dislikes it as a show name, hopefully, what they eventually will come up with will reflect the show's duo dynamic.
