Lilo & Stitch release kicked off with a record-breaking $146 million opening weekend that saw it earn the highest-grossing debut ever for a Memorial Day weekend release.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Lilo & Stitch is projected to close out its sophomore weekend by hitting a cumulative total of $280 million at the domestic box office and $610 million worldwide. This makes it only the second movie to sur the $275 million domestic milestone in 2025, behind A Minecraft Movie ($422.4 million). It squeaked past Ryan Coogler's horror hit Sinners ($267 million) to do so. It has also become only the third film of the year to cross the $600 million milestone worldwide, behind A Minecraft Movie ($944.3 million) and Ne Zha 2 ($1.899 billion).

This total also sees it suring the worldwide grosses of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil ($491.7 million), 2015's Cinderella ($543.5 million), and 2023's The Little Mermaid ($569.6 million) to land at No. 8 on the Top 10 chart of the highest-grossing live-action Disney remakes of all time.

What This Means For Lilo & Stitch

The Top 5 Is In Its Sights

This worldwide gross marks the movie as an enormous success just 10 days into its run, as the reported budget of Lilo & Stitch is only $100 million, placing its estimated break-even point somewhere around $250 million. However, it is showing no signs of slowing down. Given the fact that it has already grossed more than half a billion dollars, it could potentially become the second billion-dollar title of the year before long, which would see it climb even higher up the chart of the highest-grossing Disney live-action remakes. See the full Top 10 below:

Title

Worldwide Box Office

The Lion King (2019)

$1.657 billion

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

$1.263 billion

Aladdin (2019)

$1.050 billion

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

$1.025 billion

The Jungle Book (2016)

$966.5 million

Maleficent (2014)

$758.5 million

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

$722.6 million

Lilo & Stitch (2025)

$610 million

The Little Mermaid (2023)

$569.6 million

Cinderella (2015)

$543.5 million

Even if it only barely makes more than $1 billion, that would be enough for the movie to land among the Top 5 highest-grossing Disney live-action remakes of all time. However, it could easily exceed that milestone. While its week 2 drop was significantly more than that of Top Gun: Maverick (which was the previous record-holder for the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut), it could still be on track to gross nearly $1.2 billion by the end of its run, which would see it outgross every previous remake except The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney Live-Action Remakes Are Recovering

Although 2025 kicked off with one of Disney's lowest-grossing live-action remakes, Snow White (which grossed just $205.4 million against a reported $270 million budget and made it seem like the format was experiencing diminishing returns after the financial disappointment of The Little Mermaid), Lilo & Stitch proves that there is still money to be made with the right Disney properties. The format's success will most likely continue, as the next remake that is lined-up is 2026's live-action Moana, which is similar to Stitch in that it remakes a more contemporary animated title.
