A new reboot of Little Shop of Horrors is on the way and there are already a ton of exciting updates about The Little Shop of Halloween Horrors from director Joe Dante. The beloved horror comedy franchise began back in 1960 with the release of the extremely low-budget classic directed by legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman. The story concerns a lowly flower shop clerk, Seymour, who discovers a rare plant that makes his boss a wealthy man. The only catch is that the carnivorous plant demands more and more human blood and turns Seymour into a reluctant killer.

The cult classic became an instant hit in the 1960s and became a mainstay of late-night TV until it was usurped by the 1986 film remake which was based on an off-Broadway musical. Though the remake was almost nothing like the original, it has since become the lasting legacy of the franchise, with the 1960 film wilting in the shadow of Frank Oz's hit. Plans to continue the franchise have come and gone in recent years, but the latest attempt sees the return of Roger Corman alongside horror comedy legend Joe Dante.

Another Little Shop Of Horrors Remake Is On The Way

Coming as a somewhat surprising announcement, Little Shop of Horrors has been revealed, but this time with an all-star crew behind the scenes. The new remake, titled The Little Shop of Halloween Horrors, is the second remake of the 1960 original and will be directed by horror legend Joe Dante. Along with Dante, original director and producer Roger Corman will serve as one of the film's co-producers.

1960's The Little Shop of Horrors was allegedly made for $28,000 and was shot over two days using sets from another Roger Corman film, A Bucket of Blood.

Little Shop of Halloween Horrors is envisioned as a reimagining that is supposed to relaunch the franchise which has existed for over 60 years. Nothing is known about the plot, and no cast have been attached to the project yet. The film is written by former Joe Dante collaborator Charles S. Haas who penned the script to Dante's cult-classic sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the newly-announced remake is the return of Joe Dante to direct. The cult-classic hitmaker is best known for films like Gremlins and The Howling but hasn't directed a feature film in a decade. Co-producing the project is Roger Corman, a 70-year Hollywood veteran who produced and directed the 1960 version and has hundreds of movies to his name thanks to his groundbreaking low-budget production studio. Charles S. Haas wrote the script, and Haas' work on Gremlins 2: The New Batch helped give it its irreverent and quirky tone.

The 1960 cult classic began the Little Shop of Horrors franchise, and the 1986 musical adaptation reinvented it for a new audience several decades later. Now, The Little Shop of Halloween Horrors is another clever reinvention of the long-running series, but it isn't the first time in recent years that Hollywood has taken a stab at the property. Announced in early 2020, Warner Brothers had plans to give Little Shop a big-budget remake, but plans faltered.

Why Chris Evans' Little Shop Of Horrors Remake Was Canceled

Chris Evans nearly starred in a Little Shop of Horrors remake alongside other notable actors. Here’s why the remake project was scrapped.

Taron Egerton was attached to play the lead role as Seymour, Scarlett Johansson for Audrey, and MCU veteran Chris Evans was being considered to play the sadistic dentist, Dr. Orin Scrivello. Unfortunately, the global COVID-19 pandemic that came later in 2020 completely derailed the project, and it was eventually abandoned altogether. The Little Shop of Halloween Horrors is completely separate from the canceled 2020 version and will take the franchise in a new direction.
