Lone Survivor's True Story Explained

Luttrell, Dietz, and Murphy fighting the Taliban in Lone Survivor

The war movie is based on the 2007 book, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10, which was co-written by Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and author Patrick Robinson. Written and directed by Peter Berg, the movie adaptation dramatizes the unsuccessful United States counter-insurgent mission known as Operation Red Wings in which four Navy SEALs were tasked with tracking down the Taliban leader Ahmad Shah during the war in Afghanistan. Other than Marcus Luttrell, the team consisted of Michael Murphy, Matthew Axelson, and Danny Dietz.

As they make their way towards his last known location, the four-man team is discovered and ambushed by Shah's men, tragically resulting in the deaths of three of the SEALs. This sets up Luttrell as the titular lone survivor of Operation Red Wings, and the remainder of the film depicts the remarkable lengths he went to survive. For his acts of heroism against Taliban fighters during the operation, Luttrell was awarded both the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. Through Wahlberg's performance, Lone Survivor provides a visceral of Luttrell's incredible courage and survival.
