Final Fantasy are large in scale with many threats that deeply affect them. So it's not really surprising that many fans can see how that there is a lot of similarities between the two franchises.
In fact, if there was ever a crossover between the two franchises, fans believe that they could witness some of the greatest alliances and friendships. However, that all depends on which characters they would like to pair off since only a few characters would get along well.
Works: Frodo And Terra
Frodo Baggins is the main protagonist of the Lord Of The Rings and is the ring-bearer. Although he shares many similarities to his uncle Bilbo, he tends to hold himself back due to his kind nature. Not enjoying the journey that awaits him as the world weighs heavily on his shoulders.
Similarly, Terra is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 6, who often hesitates. Despite her abilities, she finds herself in fear of the world around her due to both amnesia and what she has done. Despite this, both characters later gain strong resolve and become instrumental in the defeat of their respective antagonist.
Won't Work: Sam And Onion Knight
Samwise Gamgee is the stalwardt ally of Frodo. Being with him from beginning to end in order to make sure that he stays safe and alive. Despite his initial fears, he learns to become braver and become one of the most emotionally resonating characters. He is also fairly responsible and can be somewhat strict at times.
Onion Knight is also one of the protagonists in the Final Fantasy franchise. Despite trying to be courageous, he is secretly afraid of fighting strong opponents. While they would work in some cases, it is this direct difference that might suggest this relationship would fail.
Works: Pippin And Yuffie
Pippin or Peregrin Took is the youngest hobbit out of the main four. His childlike nature of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time makes him mischievous. But despite that, he learns to become more mature and strong when the fate of Middle Earth seems to grow dimmer.
Similarly, Yuffie is a loud and immature ninja who attempts to steal materia. Stopping Sephiroth is one of the things that make her mature somewhat. Both characters' childlike nature would mesh well with one another.
Won't Work: Merry And Steiner
Merry, also known as Meriadoc Brandybuck is often with Pippin. Essentially being the closest of friends, which means that many of their personality traits are shared. However, while Merry can be a jokester, he is also sharp and can be practical. As he is able to handle being away from the Shire fairly well.
Although he would have a decent relationship with Steiner on the surface, they might not get along well together. This is due to Steiner's headstrong personality and quick temper in judging others. This is definitely something that wouldn't work well with Merry's practicality.
Works: Gimli And King Giott
Gimli is one of the most hardened and respected warriors in the fellowship. Although he has a strong companionship with Legolas and the other characters, he holds a strong grim outlook on life. Despite this, he has a jovial side to him and deeply cares for his fellowship.
For many fans, they believe he would get along well with King Giott, who appears during Final Fantasy 4. He's a kind king who still believes in peace. Not only would they get along due to both being Dwarves, but also with their shared comion for others as well.
Won't Work: Legolas And Zidane
Legolas is the soft-spoken Elf of the fellowship. With his responsible personality, he only speaks when necessary and can be quite respectful to others. That being said, he has limits at times and can be patronizing to people he doesn't know that well.
Contrast this with Zidane, the protagonist of Final Fantasy 9 who is not only fun-loving but also fairly loud. Both of these personalities would unfortunately clash and would cause friction. Especially due to Zidane being fairly laid-back.
Works: Bilbo And Bartz
Bilbo Baggins is the original protagonist from the Hobbit and although he is a minor character in Lord Of The Rings, he is still pivotal to why the events happened. Despite enjoying the comfort of the Shire, his desire for adventure had always been a part of him.
Likewise, Bartz is a wanderer who enjoys exploring the world around him. Due to both enjoying the adventurer life, they would get along wonderfully.
Won't Work: Gandalf And Kefka
Gandalf is the main wizard of Middle Earth and by the end of the Lord Of The Rings, the most powerful. As he is a protector of Middle Earth, he would be strongly against anything Kefka would offer as he is the main villain of Final Fantasy 6.
Not only that, but Kefka's power would be dangerous to the point of potentially destroying everything Gandalf holds dear. An aspect that would make Gandalf oppose him.
Works: Aragorn And Cecil
Aragorn is the awaited king of Gondor, whose lineage ties back to the one ring. Despite his more humble beginnings, his demeanor is fitting of a king. Similar to the rest of the fellowship, he believes that the fate of Middle Earth is on his shoulders.
Likewise, Cecil Harvey is a strong knight who felt the pain of his past sins. Seeking to redeem himself, he was determined to change from a dark knight to a paladin. With both showing humbleness and morality, these two characters would work strongly together.
Won't Work: Sauron And Chaos
Sauron and Chaos are both one of the biggest threats in their respective franchises. However, despite their strong power, they both value different things. Sauron is a character that wishes for strong dominion over Middle Earth, hoping to rule it under his thumb.
Chaos is the main villain of both Dissidia and the original Final Fantasy. Depending on the interpretation, he is a demon who seeks immortality by creating a time loop. In Dissidia, his influence is fairly light which results in a lack of loyalty with his warriors. The difference between one wishing to rule everything and the other only discord would result in them both not getting along.
