Luffy Thinks The Going Merry Is Talking To Him In One Piece Episode 3

It was actually Usopp’s voice

Luffy touches the front of the Going Merry for the first time in Netflix's One Piece

When Luffy first sees the Going Merry – which still does not have a name nor does it belong to the Straw Hats – for the first time, he thinks the ship is talking to him. However, it was just Usopp, who was cleaning the ship, answering Luffy from afar. While this could have been just a joke to highlight Luffy’s child-like perception of the world, it may also have been a direct reference to one of One Piece’s most emotional arcs – the death of the Going Merry. Shortly before the ship’s life ends, Usopp believes the Going Merry is talking to him.

The Luffy vs. Usopp fight is a pivotal moment in One Piece’s history, and it shaped the Straw Hats as a crew.

A few months into their adventures, which for hundreds of episodes in the original anime, the Straw Hats realize that the Going Merry will not last much longer. While the rest of the crew was deciding what to do and whether they should go after a new ship, Usopp began to hear the Going Merry as if the ship was alive. This confirmed how powerful the bond between the ship and Usopp was, and it also revealed that ships do have souls in the world of One Piece, sort of.

Luffy and Usopp’s fallout and eventual fight come down to the debate of whether they should replace the Going Merry with a new ship. While Luffy initially did not want to leave the Going Merry behind either, the straw hat pirate realized that the ship had already run its course and that it was time for them to find a new one. Luffy believed that, for their journey to continue, the Straw Hats needed to immediately find a replacement for the Going Merry. Usopp, on the other hand, had a stronger connection to the ship and refused to abandon it.

Although the Going Merry won’t die in One Piece season 2 based on which arcs the show is most likely to cover next, it will not take too long for it to happen in live-action. Luffy and Usopp fight for the fate of the Going Merry in episode 236 of the One Piece anime, which is part of the Water 7 Saga and should be covered in Netflix’s One Piece season 3. The first season of the live-action adaptation adapted all of the East Blue Saga, going from Luffy’s introduction to when the Straw Hats sail for the Grand Line.

Presumably, One Piece season 2 will cover the Arabasta Saga, which stars with the Reverse Mountain arc and ends with epic-scale combat for the future of the Arabasta Kingdom. Assuming the Netflix adaptation successfully condenses all of Arabasta into a season, a potential season 3 could quickly go over the divisive Sky Island Saga and get at least into the first portion of Water 7. That said, One Piece should not rush things too much, especially because moments like the Going Merry’s death only work if viewers are attached to the ship and the characters.
