In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Magmortar was introduced as Magmar's evolution, but it could only be obtained by trading Magmar with the held item called the Magmarizer.
Unfortunately, Pokémon can't use held items in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, so Magmar's method of evolution has changed. What remains the same, however, are the stat changes that Magmortar sees when it evolves from Magmar. When Magmar evolves into Magmortar, its HP, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats all receive a small increase. Additionally, while Magmortar's Attack stat has the same value as Magmar's, Magmortar actually sees a slight drop in its Speed stat.
Though held items can no longer be used to evolve Pokémon, players still need to use a Magmarizer in order to evolve Magmar into Magmortar in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Similar to the evolutionary stones such as the Dawn Stone Pokémon Legends: Arceus, players can evolve Magmar by using the Magmarizer as if it were an evolution stone. Magmarizers are extremely rare to find on their own in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but the good news is that Magmarizers are available from several sources.
How To Get The Magmarizer In Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Like Magmar and Magmortar themselves, players can actually find Magmarizers inside of Space-Time Distortions throughout Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Magmarizers are still extremely rare to find in the Space-Time Distortions, however, simply because all of the evolution items can also spawn instead of the Magmarizer. Fortunately, if players manage to find one Magmarizer in a Space-Time Distortion then they can usually find one or two additional Magmarizers before the distortion ends.
Alternatively, players can also get a Magmarizer from the Trading Post by spending Merit Points in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Merit Points are easy to earn in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, as they only require players to find the satchels of other players who have blacked out in the Hisui region after taking too much damage. Once a satchel has been found, head to the Lost and Found menu to claim the Merit Points. The Magmarizer can also, occasionally, be purchased from the Ginkgo Guild Shop as the Magma Box for 10,000 Poké Dollars. With any luck, players will quickly obtain all the Magmarizers they'll need to complete their Magmar evolution research in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is available now on Nintendo Switch.
