With The Mandalorian season 3 coming in March 2023, Din Djarin and Grogu are headed into a Civil War with the other Mandalorian clans. Having won the Darksaber in combat from Moff Gideon at the end of The Mandalorian season 2, Din now has a legitimate claim to the throne of Mandalore. But Bo-Katan—who has also held the Darksaber before—has been seeking to rule Mandalore for far longer than Din. As the leader of Clan Kryze, Bo-Katan has far more manpower and connections at her disposal than Din does, which will come in handy if she attempts to win the Darksaber from him.
A Mandalorian clan is similar to a family—but there need not be any blood relation between its . While these clans can remain solo (such as Din and Grogu) they can also group up into Mandalorian houses. From there, the houses align themselves with political factions such as Death Watch or the Nite Owls. But the one who wields the Darksaber can unite them all. Regardless, the clan remains the core unit of the Mandalorian culture. The Mandalorian Season 3 has already teased several Mandalorians involved in the Civil War, and while some of them may be from new clans—others are more recognizable.
Clan Mudhorn
The most obvious clan at play in The Mandalorian season 3 is Clan Mudhorn. Up to this point, Din’s small clan was mostly insignificant when it came to the politics of the Mandalorians. But now Din wields the Darksaber, which has traditionally been the symbol that united all the clans and houses into one. With the Darksaber in his hand, all the other Mandalorian clans look to him and Grogu with bated breath. Bo-Katan will likely duel Din for the Darksaber in The Mandalorian season 3, but who comes out as the victor will decide the future and fate of Mandalore.
Din Djarin is unique among those who have wielded the Darksaber in that he doesn’t seem sure what he wants to do with it yet. Like Sabine Wren before him, he attempted to simply give the Darksaber to Bo-Katan for her to rule Mandalore. But that changed when he realized it must be won in combat. Instead, Din has kept the Darksaber and has even defended his claim on it. Perhaps he plans to create a united Mandalorian clan so he and Grogu can live peaceably. Nevertheless, Din struggles to wield the Darksaber because of his indecision on what to do with it.
Clan Kryze
Along with Clan Mudhorn, Clan Kryze is the other obvious clan to make an appearance in The Mandalorian season 3. But while Clan Mudhorn’s leader seems indecisive on what he should do with the Darksaber, Bo-Katan Kryze knows exactly what she would do with it. She has lived through several rulers of Mandalore, from her pacifist sister to the tyrant Darth Maul. All the while, she waits for her turn to seize power so that she can guide Mandalore the way she wants to.
Long before Din even knew the Darksaber existed, Bo-Katan was given it and wielded it during the final season of Bo-Katan’s Darksaber claim wasn’t legitimate. Her brief taste of the power and prestige that came with it was enough for her to try and hunt down Moff Gideon in order to win the Darksaber from him. But despite her and Clan Kryze’s best efforts, Clan Mudhorn got to Gideon first.
Clan Fett
Despite not having been confirmed, it’s also possible that Clan Fett may make an appearance in The Mandalorian season 3. Toward the end of Boba has replaced Jabba on Tatooine as its ruler, he may be too busy being the Daimyo to care about what happens to the Mandalorians as a whole—regardless of what Din might say to try and convince him.
Clan Wren
Clan Wren was crucial in liberating Mandalore from the Empire during Rebels, and it’s very likely that some of its will be mentioned or shown in The Mandalorian season 3. Clan Wren’s most notable member is Sabine Wren. Like Din, Sabine won the Darksaber through combat with Gar Saxon, and wielded it briefly before handing it over to Bo-Katan. Sabine’s father, mother, and brother could also make appearances—since they were last seen pledging themselves to Bo-Katan when she was given the Darksaber. Though, whether they survived the Great Purge of Mandalore has yet to be confirmed.
Since Natasha Liu Bordizzo was cast as Sabine Wren in the Ahsoka series, it’s likely she may be introduced in The Mandalorian season 3 ahead of her role in Ahsoka’s show. Sabine has already assisted in liberating Mandalore of the Empire once before. And she may already be in league with Bo-Katan, having sided with her in the past. But Rebels made it clear that she herself has no desire to be the ruler of Mandalore—despite having had that honor within her grasp.
Clan Vizsla
Clan Vizsla is perhaps one of the oldest Mandalorian clans. And from the very brief shot of Paz Vizsla in The Mandalorian Season 3 trailer—he will be making an appearance. An ancient member of the Vizsla Clan, Tarre Vizsla, originally crafted the Darksaber. Because of his heritage to Tarre, Paz Vizsla strongly believes that he should be the one to wield it. Paz was last seen challenging Din to a duel for the Darksaber in The Book of Boba Fett, and while Paz was momentarily successful in wrenching the Darksaber from Din, he ultimately lost the duel.
Clan Rook & Clan Eldar
Finally, Clan Rook and Clan Eldar may also make an appearance in The Mandalorian season 3. There are no notable of either clan that can be named, but both clans pledged their loyalty to Bo-Katan when she was given the Darksaber. Unlike The Children of the Watch, these Mandalorians clearly did not believe in the same Creed Din does. Whether these clans survived the Great Purge by the Empire is unclear, but since Bo-Katan managed to, it’s possible that of Clan Rook or Eldar did as well. If they have survived, then they may still follow Bo-Katan’s claim to the throne of Mandalore.
While there are plenty of recognizable Mandalorian clans alive and active during The Mandalorian season 3, there may still be new clans that come out of the woodwork when news spreads that the Darksaber has been reclaimed. Clan Vizsla has already attempted to take the Darksaber from Din, and Clan Kryze will likely try as well. Whether the other clans will follow Din or attempt to overthrow him is one of the biggest questions The Mandalorian season 3 has to answer.
