During a podcast appearance, legendary comic book writer Mark Millar briefly spoke about the conditions under which he would return to Marvel Comics, for whom he authored the groundbreaking Civil War storyline in 2006-07 – suggesting that he would only come back for something that was even "bigger," more ambitious, and more impactful.
Speaking on the Word Balloon podcast, Millar itted that he has an idea for what this massive story would be, but of course he kept this tightly under wraps during his conversation with host John Siuntres.
Civil War stands as one of the most pivotal storylines in Marvel history. In many ways, it redefined the idea of a huge event series; every crossover that has followed, from both Marvel and DC, has in some way been indebted to Millar's epic.
Mark Millar Would Only Return To Marvel For A Story "Bigger Than Civil War"
The Writer Named This Condition On The Word Balloon Podcast
Mark Millar has not worked for Marvel Comics in nearly a decade; in 2011, the author stepped away from mainstream superhero titles to focus exclusively on his creator-owned work following the success of high-profile adaptations like Wanted and Kick-Ass. Millar evidently has sprawling crossovers on his mind, as last year he produced the Big Game miniseries, which tied together twenty years of his independent comic creations into a single shared universe. Now, as he told Word Balloon, he wouldn't be opposed to one final tour de force through the Marvel Universe.

Big Game: Wesley Gibson's Final Moments Reveal the True Meaning of Mark Millar's "Wanted" Was Right There All Along
Wesley Gibson's ending in Mark Millar's "Big Game" miniseries makes it clear that the true meaning of "Wanted" has been overlooked for decades.
Millar related his openness to working for Marvel again in the future, but the acclaimed writer set one massive condition in order for this to happen. Millar explained that he spoke to Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski not too long again, a conversation during which he laid out his prerequisite for a return. As he stated:
“I said to [C.B. Cebulski], ‘Look, I only want to do something at Marvel if I can make it bigger than Civil War, or else what’s the point?’”
As one of comics' most ambitious writers, it makes sense that Millar would not want to revisit his tenure at Marvel if it didn't bring with it the opportunity to out-do his shining achievement for the company.
Topping Civil War Would Cement Mark Millar's Legacy At Marvel Comics
The Prolific Author's Return Would Be Much Heralded
What is most intriguing to comic fans, particularly fans of Millar's ouvre, is that Mark Millar claims to already have a story in mind for his Marvel renaissance – though at this time, it is nothing more than an idea at this point for the author, and a dream for readers. As Millar explained:
The thing I have is way bigger than Civil War. I said, ‘This is the one thing that could top it.’ I haven’t told [Marvel] what it is. I’m gonna hold off on that just now.
In other words, while this project may never come to fruition, Millar's comments stoked fan excitement for the potential of his reprise at Marvel for such a massive story.
Elsewhere in his Word Balloon interview, the writer also discussed plans for a potential return to DC Comics with a new Superman story, though there seems to be uncertainty around that as well. “We’ll see what happens,” Millar said, leaving fans with little more to do than speculate for now. In any case, the idea of a Mark Millar storyline "bigger than Civil War is certain to have all Marvel fans rabidly curious about what that could entail. Of course, if there is any one creator who can be trusted to make good on such a proclamation, it is Mark Millar.
