Legendary writer Mark Waid has confirmed that “time is breaking” in the Superman. So, what’s causing this rift in time, and why is it one of the most exciting developments in the DCU in years? We’ve got the answers.

Popverse recently sat down with writer Mark Waid to discuss DC’s time-traveling crossover, We Are Yesterday, which he will be leading. This event will span Waid’s ongoing titles, Justice League Unlimited, Batman/Superman: World's Finest, and his New History of the DC Universe.

The primary goal of the crossover is to realign the DC timeline, but before it can be fixed, it must first be broken, something that’s already in progress. The real question is: how much must the timeline break for its jagged pieces to realign?

While discussing the crossover, Popverse asked how Batman, Superman, and the rest of DC’s heroes will be affected. Waid confirmed that the crossover will have short-term impacts on the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel, but there will also be significant long-term effects. He explained that “all kinds of paradoxes are happening because time is breaking as a result of the Darkseid energy and Grodd’s shenanigans.” This statement refers to Waid’s Absolute Power crisis event, which led to the events of DC’s 2024 All In Special #1, where Darkseid ‘died’ and the Absolute Universe was created.

The creation of the Absolute line serves as a primary example of time breaking in the DC Universe, setting the stage for the We Are Yesterday storyline. With time travel playing a key role, it’s clear that events like Gorilla Grodd bringing the entire Legion of Doom to the present will only further fracture the timeline, leading to significant fallout and consequences. Waid concluded by saying, “All sorts of things are happening in the time stream, and this is only making it worse.” Hence, it’s clear the timeline will only get worse before it gets better.

While many details about We Are Yesterday remain under wraps, fans can expect Air Wave to play a significant role in the time-bending, villain-recruiting, mind-swapping events. Those following Waid’s Justice League Unlimited series know that Air Wave has already betrayed the League and is now working with the Legion of Doom, taking orders from Gorilla Grodd. Recently, Grodd underwent a mysterious power upgrade and has made it his mission to reshape the world by rebuilding the Legion of Doom. However, instead of recruiting present-day villains, Grodd will be bringing past versions of DC’s most infamous supervillains to face the Justice League in this epic crossover.
