In case anyone didn't hear, Deadpool and Batman are officially about to meet in Marvel and DC Comics' first crossover in over twenty years. Fans everywhere are still reeling from the announcement that the Big Two are collaborating again, especially since the crossover will bring the World's Greatest Detective and the Merc with a Mouth together for the first time.

It was just months ago at ComicsPRO that Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Marie Javins stunned the comic book world. For the first time in two decades, the Big Two publishers were finally going to collaborate on a pair of one-shots that were intended to be released later in 2025. While there were no hints as to what characters would be involved or what creative teams were attached, fans were immediately hyped at the prospect of seeing the DC Universe and the Marvel Universe collide once again.

For months, fans were left to speculate on what DC and Marvel were cooking, but their patience was eventually rewarded when Entertainment Weekly broke the news no fan expected to hear. The website revealed that this September, Marvel Comics will publish Deadpool/Batman #1, the first Marvel/DC crossover in years. This one-shot story will be written by Zeb Wells (The Amazing Spider-Man, Deadpool & Wolverine), and drawn by Greg Capullo (Batman, Wolverine: Revenge). However, that’s just half of the fun as DC Comics is publishing a second crossover one-shot just a few months later.

On the DC side of things, the publisher is putting out Batman/Deadpool #1 in November. To bring this crossover to life, DC Comics tapped comic book icon and mind behind the Bat Epic, Grant Morrison, as well as superstar artist Dan Mora (Justice League Unlimited, Superman). While details of Batman/Deadpool #1 remain hush-hush for now, Morrison released a statement about the Marvel/DC crossover, saying that fans could expect a lot from the comic, including “4th wall-busting mayhem, owls, blood, blades, and at least one giant typewriter!”.

Grant Morrison has been in the game for a long time and in the decades they’ve been in the comic book scene, they’ve made some truly impressive works. Morrison made a name for themselves back in the late ‘80s writing bold, experimental stories for DC Comics that reinvented classic characters in stunning ways. Books like Doom Patrol and Animal Man weren’t just standard superhero stories, they were thoughtful reinventions of classic DC heroes that saw them tackle weird metaphysical threats and (in Animal Man’s case), the fourth wall itself.

Among the various stories was The Multiversity: Ultra Comics, a comic book that brought a hero to ‘life’ via the hero reading them. Grant Morrison has never shied away from getting weird or trippy with their stories, and their particular brand of odd has endeared them to an entire generation of comic book readers.

Of course, Morrison is just one half of Batman/Deadpool #1 (let’s be real, Dan Mora is going to crush it with the art). And Batman/Deadpool #1 is one half of this overall collaboration as Zeb Wells and Greg Capullo are taking care of Marvel’s one-shot. While no slight is intended towards anyone else working on either of these one-shots, getting Morrison to spearhead DC’s one-shot is, frankly, a major plus. Between their previous experience with Batman and their offbeat, meta approach to comics, no one is better suited to the crossover than Grant Morrison.

ittedly, Morrison has written more than their fair share of Batman in the past, and they’ve never even written Deadpool before. But they obviously know Batman inside and out and perfected Bruce Wayne’s voice over the course of Morrison’s career. And while Deadpool’s fourth-wall annihilating humor can be hard to do right, Morrison has spent the better part of their years creating stories dripping with meta-awareness. Is this crossover going to be hard to pull off? Sure, but Grant Morrison has what it takes to do both Marvel and DC’s icons justice.

Obviously, no one knows what the future holds and having a serious character like Batman going toe-to-toe with someone like Deadpool could be either really entertaining or really annoying. While there are more than enough capable writers in the comic book scene, Morrison is one of the few who has proven experience writing the Dark Knight and meta-aware fiction to pull this crossover off. Anything could happen when Deadpool and Batman meet, but with Morrison at the helm, it’s undoubtedly going to be a hell of a show.
