Thor is more powerful than many of his Marvel superhero peers just by nature of his status as a god, a superbeing from the Realm of Asgard – but as Al Ewing's Immortal Thor #1 has established, there are beings that exist above the Asgardians in the hierarchy of power in the cosmos, including Toranos, the Utgard-Thor.

Utgard-Thor is depicted as a figure so massive that he looms over New York City, with Thor roughly corresponding to him in size the way an ant does to a human being. A blast of the Elder God's lightning completely obliterates the Statue of Liberty – as Thor is sitting on it. As the narration in Immortal Thor #1 puts it, "Thor was only god of the storm." but now, he has been confronted by the "god of the superstorm," one who threatens to "tear the structures of mankind from the Earth." Toranos' control of the weather is so complete that it could render Thor ineffective in a fight.

Thor might be the Elder God appears unfazed by. As the narration states, "Then the very Earth did tremble at the war now just beginning..." indicating that Thor's conflict with his predecessor will be a long and drawn out contest, pushing the hero to the limits of his abilities, and possibly beyond.

Immortal Thor promises to redefine the character's place in the Marvel Universe. The first issue begins what appears like it will be a cosmic struggle with a classic Avengers moment – an attack on New York by a seemingly unstoppable force. It is unclear whether Thor will have the strength to stop Toranos, the Utgard-Thor, from leaving in the city in ruins, or if some other intervention will save the city. It also remains to be elucidated why Toranos has come to Earth to "shatter [the] false world apart." What is clear is that a new era in Thor's history has begun, one that will test him like never before.
