WARNING! Includes spoilers for the Matlock season 1 finale!!

including the show's villain, Jason Ritter (Julian Markston). The finale delivered a bold narrative risk that left many viewers divided, especially since it seems like Markston's the one who's been hiding the Wellbrexa documents. Now that it's known that Markston is a true villain, this cliffhanger has left fans on the edge of their seats.

During an interview with Variety, Ritter, along with his TV dad, Howard "Senior" Markston (Beau Bridges), sat with the publication to talk about the finale and the ongoing mystery of who had these files. For Ritter, stepping into such a polarizing role came with real concern about fan reactions and how they would respond to such a dramatic shift in tone and motive.

Interviewer: Were you worried about how angry people were going to be with you after the reveal?

Ritter: I was nervous about that. There was, like, a two-week break where the guilt had shifted towards Olympia and the heat was off me for a little bit. I greatly enjoyed that period of time.

What The Finale Twist Means For Ritter's Character

This Could Hurt Julian's Character Development In Season 2

After watching the Matlock finale, the twist at the end will cause major issues for Julian. As a senior partner at Jacobson Moore, Julian seemed like a polished but powerful attorney at the beginning of Matlock season, despite also being involved in a divorce with his estranged wife, Olympia Lawernece (Skye P. Marshall), all while handling a settlement with a pharmaceutical corporation. However, the finale’s twist adds more complexity and potentially risks Julian's character development.

Matlock season 1 was full of tearful moments involving death and betrayal, but looking back, some were inevitably far more tragic than others.

Julian hiding the Wellbrexa documents could seriously hurt his credibility as a lawyer or with the firm. Even though he took the files to seek approval from his father, this incident could be a huge blow to his career. Since Olympia is the one who found him with them, this may also affect their ongoing divorce. No matter what, the twist confirms that Julian will have a more central role in Matlock season 2, becoming more involved in the dramatic storylines. However, some fans might not be so happy with his return, depending on what he does with the Wellbrexa documents.

Our Take On The Matlock Finale Twist

Julian Seems To Regret What He Did

Jason Ritter as Julian, Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, and Skye P. Marshall as Olympia in Matlock

Finding out Julian had the Wellbrexa documents was a plot twist no one saw coming and is a huge game-changer for both the firm and the Matlock storylines. Despite Julian always coming off as the villain, he seemed genuinely upset about what he had done, especially since Olympia was the one who found him with them. Julian holding onto key evidence raises the question of whether he was protecting the firm, himself, or playing a different game entirely. What this means is that Matlock season 2 will put Julian at the center of the league drama.
