Warning: spoilers from True Lies season 1, episode 4 ahead!Matthew Lillard guest starred on True Lies show fixes many of the movie's problems.
The promo for True Lies featured Scream actor Matthew Lillard, so everyone knew this was coming. Besides Scream, Lillard has also been in the Scooby-Doo films, Hackers and She’s All That. While his bigger movies were in the 90s and early 2000s, he’s still a well-known actor who is even returning to horror with Five Night at Freddy’s. So, this is a big get for the True Lies show that it should capitalize on.
Matthew Lillard's The Wolf Is An Exciting Original True Lies Character
Matthew Lillard plays an assassin whose code name is The Wolf. This character wasn’t in the original film, but he’s an excellent addition to the show. The Wolf is good at his job and has no regrets when taking out his targets. He even has cravings right after he finishes his assignment, which is weird but adds to the overall complexity of the character. The Wolf also has a sweet side. He makes everyone on the team feel good. He helps them do their jobs better and brings up team morale — not something that’s expected from an assassin.
Part of the reason The Wolf is so good at his job is that he claims he has no feelings. That’s how he can have no regret or remorse about killing people. While the operative has no qualms about his actions, The Wolf wonders if something is wrong with him. This makes his character so interesting because wondering if it’s normal to act as he does is such a normal human thing. This contradicts who he is supposed to be. In addition, Helen gets him to open up about these feelings like no one ever has.
The Wolf Has A Fun Dynamic With Helen In True Lies
In True Lies season 1, episode 4, Helen feels isolated because she is the only trainee at Omega Sector, and no one is willing to eat lunch with her. She randomly sits down with The Wolf, and he welcomes her with no problem. He’s taken aback when Helen asks him his real name because no one has ever asked him that. This leads to them having lunch together all the time, and he even helps her with weapons training. He sees True Lies' Helen's potential as being a great spy. They become work husband and wife.
Helen is the first person to ask him personal questions, and Nathan is the first person to make Helen feel like part of the team. It’s a cute dynamic for the actors to play. Matthew Lillard and Ginger Gonzaga have great chemistry. They are so funny together. On paper, these two shouldn’t be friends at all. Helen is an empathetic person, and Nathan kills people for a living. But she sees more in him than just his job. It’s also fun how jealous Harry gets of their relationship. And he’s also just concerned about her spending so much time with an assassin.
Harry's Tension With The Wolf Could Be Interesting In True Lies
Harry isn’t scared of much, but he’s terrified of The Wolf. It’s in big contrast to how the rest of the team sees him. They love him, but Harry doesn’t trust someone who can eat right after killing people. This is Harry’s first time meeting The Wolf. He worked with him once in Athens, and he hasn’t gotten the terrified people’s cries out of his mind. So Harry is constantly on guard when The Wolf is around and is not quiet about his feelings, with The Wolf even walking in on him, calling him a “murderous psychopath.”
While Harry dislikes The Wolf, Steve Howey and Matthew Lillard have a great dynamic, which is funny. They both react well to the other. Lillard is more of a blank slate, and Harry shares his emotions. Harry is unlikely to come around to The Wolf, which will keep their interactions interesting. But Helen also wants Harry to see what the rest of the team sees in him. Having him keep an open mind with interactions but also reverting to his stance that he can’t get past how cavalier he is about killing people would be an excellent dynamic for the show to play on.
Matthew Lillard's The Wolf Has More Story To Tell In True Lies
While True Lies may have seemed to have shut the door on The Wolf, as Helen finally sees some of what Harry has been telling her, there’s still more room to explore Matthew Lillard's character. His moral complexity makes him unique. But he may not be so satisfied with who he is. Helen was concerned about the team using guns on their mission, and she told Nathan: “I know you have a good heart, and I hope that you that today.” That one line stopped The Wolf from being tempted to kill Harry. It shows he has room for growth that True Lies could explore.
Matthew Lillard was a fun addition to the cast and would be a great recurring character. Helen doesn’t have too much one-on-one time with anyone else in the cast, so keeping Helen and Nathan’s dynamic alive gives her character more to work with when she’s trying to help Nathan grow. The awkward run-ins with Harry are also great. It keeps Harry on his toes. The Wolf gives Maria a new holster to help with her draw. Maybe he’s helping Harry stay sharp for missions. Matthew Lillard’s True Lies character brings something to every member of the team.
