Magic Mike Is Now Streaming On Netflix – Why It's One Of Matthew McConaughey's Greatest Performances
McConaughey's ing Magic Mike Role Is Unexpectedly Compelling
Magic Mike, the titillating comedy drama chronicling the lifestyles of Xquisite Strip Club's male strippers, took the world by storm in 2012. The film was a big draw, featuring McConaughey, Channing Tatum, and other notable stars as irresistibly built exotic dancers known as Magic Mike's Kings of Tampa. Yet, just below the movie's barely-there costuming and spicy dance routines is a valuable portrait of the not-so-glamorous underbelly of the profession, complete with compelling characters. As Xquisite's owner, Dallas, McConaughey's character is easily the most interesting, and, like the film, there’s more to him than what shows on the surface.
The dichotomy between Dallas' uber-masculine image and who he actually is set McConaughey up for a surprisingly riveting performance that should rank among his greatest.
Outwardly, Dallas is the perfect illustration of masculinity. He is a hunky businessman who also parodies over-the-top representations of manhood onstage, where he appears as cowboys and construction workers. Underneath it all, however, Dallas is plagued by hangups that undermine his image, including but not necessarily limited to greed, which compromises his capability as a leader, and financial instability, which impedes his status as a breadwinner. The dichotomy between Dallas' uber-masculine image and who he actually is underneath set McConaughey up for a surprisingly riveting performance that should rank among his greatest.
Matthew McConaughey's Magic Mike performance is available to stream on Netflix now.
