While romantic comedies were a big thing back in the '90s and 2000s, it's safe to say that this genre has been pretty thin and lacking in recent years. Thanks to some amazing storytellers and filmmakers, there seem to be all kinds of rom-coms coming out once again.
One such movie is Crazy Rich Asians. The 2018 film, based on the book by Kevin Kwan, stars Constance Wu and Henry Golding as couple Rachel Chu and Nick Young. Things are going just fine until he invites her back home to Singapore with him... and she realizes that he's actually totally wealthy. More than that, his mom isn't too happy that she's there.
Let's take a look at the MBTIs of the characters in this amazing movie.
Eddie Cheng: ESTP
Eddie Cheng (Ronny Chieng) is one of Nick's family who the audience is introduced to once Rachel is in Singapore. Eddie and Nick are cousins, but it's super obvious that Nick doesn't feel the same way about living a rich lifestyle that Eddie does.
Since Eddie absolutely adores being rich and this is something that influences him all the time, he seems like someone who sets goals and meets them (even if the goal is just to keep making more money). His MBTI would be ESTP or "Energetic Problem-Solver." ESTPs are known for "bringing energy into various situations" and they don't like "goals not resulting from efforts." They're also "assertive" and "active."
Astrid Young Teo: ISTP
Astrid Young Teo (Gemma Chan) is a trendsetting fashionista. At first, when audiences are introduced to her, she seems like a very unhappy person and like she doesn't have a very bubbly personality. It quickly becomes obvious that she has the worst marriage ever.
Astrid seems like she would be an ISTP or "Logical Pragmatist." It takes her quite a long time to it out loud that her marriage isn't working out. ISTPs are "calm" and "patient" and she seems to act that way. In the end, she's "independent" and "self-determined" since she leaves her husband, Michael.
Wye Mun Goh: ESFP
Ken Jeong plays Rachel's pal Peik Lin Goh's dad. He's a cheerful character who brings a sense of lightness to the already sweet and funny film.
When Rachel spends time at their house, he constantly cracks jokes and acts really silly. Based on that, he seems like an ESFP or "Enthusiastic Improviser." He's "friendly and expressive" and also "talkative."
Oliver T'sien: ENTP
Oliver T’sien (Nico Santos) loves clothing and always dresses like he's got someone to impress. Of course, he probably does since everyone in the world of this movie wants to look good and have other people think that they're worthy of praise.
Oliver would be an ENTP or "Enterprising Explorer" since he's "curious" and "lively." ESTPs don't like "isolation" and he does seem like the life of the party. He would just be so much fun to hang out with.
Kerry Chu: INFP
Kerry Chu (Tan Kheng Hua) is Rachel's mother who is definitely very different from Nick's mother (which is, of course, the point of the movie). In one of the biggest moments in the movie, Rachel is told that her mom totally lied to her and said that her dad had ed away. Thankfully, Rachel's mom is honest with her and says that he had mistreated her so she made up a story. As often happens in these middle-of-the-movie scenes, what seems like the biggest deal ever actually seems logical in the end.
Rachel's mom's MBTI would be INFP or "Thoughtful Idealist." She is "loyal" to her daughter." She also has a "long-range vision" since she figured out how to raise her daughter as a single mother without delving too deep into their tough and difficult past. Of course, that didn't work out so well, but their story does have a happy ending.
Nick's Ah Ma: ENTJ
One of the most interesting parts of the movie is when Rachel learns that Nick's mom has actually experienced the same kind of family judgment that she's currently going through. When Eleanor was marrying into the family, it was made clear to her that she just wasn't good enough.
When it comes to the MBTI of Nick's grandmother (Lisa Lu), she would be an ENTJ or "Decisive Strategist." She is very traditional and wants people to follow what the family has been doing. She is definitely "tough when necessary" and has a lot of "self-confidence." She has a very commanding presence.
Peik Lin Goh: ENFP
Awkwafina is always amazing no matter what she does, and it's pretty thrilling to see her pop up in Crazy Rich Asians. Her character, Peik Lin Goh, is good friends with Rachel, and when Rachel goes over to her house, it's too much fun to see the way that the other half lives.
When she learns that Rachel's boyfriend is Nick Young, she's jealous and impressed (and even has a change of outfits in her car when she's invited to the big party that Nick's family is throwing).
Peik Lin Goh can go with the flow and adapt to anything. Her MBTI is ENFP or "Imaginative Motivator." As the description explains about this personality type (which sounds like her), "Their energy is stimulated by new people and experiences." She's also "gregarious" and "caring" and "expressive."
Eleanor Young: ISTJ
Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) is Nick's mother. She is fabulously dressed and more than a little bit intimidating to Rachel. While Rachel wants her acceptance more than anything, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen, at least for most of the movie.
Eleanor cares about her family's reputation and since Rachel is from another class (aka a lower class), it's hard for her to imagine her son ending up marrying her. Her MBTI would be ISTJ or "Responsible Realist" because she wants things to always remain the same. ISTJs "enjoy working within clearly defined systems and processes in a traditional, task-oriented, decisive way."
Nick Young: INTP
It would be tough to find a more flawless rom com protagonist than Nick Young. Handsome, kind, and romantic, he makes Rachel feel like a princess (and makes audiences swoon). The only problem with Nick, of course, is that he has a tendency to not tell the truth... or, let's say, omit the truth.
Nick's MBTI would be INTP or "Objective Analyst." Since he didn't think that it was super relevant to let Rachel know about his super rich family, he simply left that out of their conversations. He's "logical" and he's also "independent" since he's able to live so far away from his family. He loves them, but he wants to live his own life.
Rachel Chu: INTJ
Rachel Chu's MTBI would be INTJ or "Conceptual Planner." She seems like the type of person who needs to know what their future will look like. She plays by the rules and is comfortable with her life, even if she definitely doesn't have as much money as Nick and his relatives.
Rachel is "competent" and "clear" and also "decisive." Her shining moment is when she lets Nick's mom know that if she forces Nick to choose her instead of Rachel, he's going to resent her and that will only work for Rachel in the end. She's tough when she has to be and she's a really inspiring character.
