Marvel's newly announced Halloween special could be an introduction to the Werewolf by Night, a fairly obscure character that was a member of the group. The special, planned for a 2022 release, is so far billed as a solo outing, but the setup may be the perfect platform to start expanding on Marvel's foray into the occult.

The Midnight Sons date back to 1992, first appearing in Ghost Rider vol. 3 #28 as part of a crossover event called Doctor Strange was trying to unite a group of supernatural heroes, which also included Morbius and Blade, to combat the growing threat. A later iteration of the team brought in Werewolf by Night alongside a returning Morbius to fight the undead within the Marvel Zombies series.

Over the years, the Midnight Sons have featured a host of prominent Marvel heroes that have already appeared or are planned to appear in the MCU. Doctor Strange is obviously the most established force, but Marvel has also announced a Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali, as well as a Moon Knight television series starring Oscar Isaac, the latter of which actually made his first appearance in Werewolf by Night #32 and recently became a Midnight Son in the 2018 limited comic series Damnation. Sony's Morbius film presents a potential opportunity depending on the studio's plans for its Spider-Man Universe, and Ghost Rider and fellow Hellstrom and Iron Fist have appeared on Marvel-branded tv shows (though they seem to presently have no connection to the MCU anymore).

Marvel Doctor Strange Man-Thing comics

Almost nothing is known about Marvel's so-far-untitled Halloween special, except for the main casting and the fact that it will premiere on Disney+. However, it opens up possibilities to further expand the mystical side of the MCU. In the comics, Werewolf by Night is the monstrous moniker of two people, Jack Russell and Jake Gomez, the latter of which just debuted in October 2020. It's unclear which identity Bernal is taking up, but Russell's backstory has a strong connection to the Darkhold, the mysterious Book of the Damned that appeared in WandaVision. Clearly, Marvel is already unraveling its more magical side, so introducing Lycanthropy to the mix isn't totally out of the question.

Even if the Halloween special is solely focusing on Werewolf by Night, it could still serve as a springboard for the rest of the Midnight Sons. The ending of WandaVision proves that the Darkhold will still play an important role in future MCU installments, and the  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will presumably introduce more elements of the occult. Moon Knight premieres next year, as well, opening the possibility that the two characters might crossover to repeat their comic book roots. Whether he's ing the Midnight Sons or going solo, Werewolf by Night, little known outside of comic book circles, may become more of a household name next October.
