Part of what makes Thor's journey so impactful is the audience's ability to be inspired and emotionally affected by the moments that affect Thor himself. Appearing in seven Marvel movies over the last 12 years, let's take a look at 5 Thor moments where fans were uplifted and 5 where fans felt his pain.

In the final moments of who is actually Loki in disguise) back on Asgard and not only offers to give up his hammer but also gives up the throne using the reason that he will continue to defend the realms as best he can, but he realizes he cannot continue to save the realms if he has duties as King of Asgard.

The majority of Thor's MCU character arc revolves around his position as the king of Asgard. Giving up the throne so he can be with Jane and defend earth was certainly a powerful moment for him.

Even when he found Mjolnir again he was unable to wield it as he was still considered unworthy. Every asset he had on Asgard, his family, and hammer were now gone, leading him on a journey of self-discovery that led him to become the god of thunder we know today.

Inspirational: When He Sacrificed Himself For Earth

Thor in a standoff with the metallic Destroyer in New Mexico in Thor (2011)

By the end of Thor, we had seen a massive development in him as a character. He went from a battle-thirsty reckless boy at the beginning to a worthy king by the end and this was shown in his willingness to sacrifice himself for Earth in the third act.

When Loki sent The Destroyer, Thor knew the only way to end the massacre was for him to die. This act returned Thor's powers and he became worthy again, but the fact that he didn't know this when he sacrificed himself makes the moment a top contender for one of his most inspiring moments.

Felt Sorry For Thor: When He Lost His Hammer

Mjolnir destroyed

Thor's hammer Mjolnir at the hands of his sister Hela - the goddess of death. This was the beginning of Thor realizing his full potential which started during his battle with the Hulk on Sakaar.

Before this, as far as Thor was aware, he had lost the source of his power and had only his physical strength left to fight with.

Inspirational: When He Took The Full Force Of A Star

Nidavellir

Avengers: Infinity War almost had a very Thor-centric narrative. Between the film opening on the Asgardian rescue ship, Thor meeting the guardians, the scene on Nidavellir, his entrance in Wakanda, and him almost killing Thanos at the end, Thor featured heavily in the movie.

When Thor was on Nidavellir, in order to forge Stormbreaker he had to take on the full power of the dying star even when it meant he could die in the process. His understanding that if he didn't have the ax, he knew he was going to die anyway, made this a no-brainer for Thor.

Felt Sorry For Thor: When He Lost His Father

Odin sits with Thor and Loki in a green field in Thor Ragnarok

Throughout Odin's appearances in the MCU, we have seen him banish his own son, have Thor commit treason against him, Loki trick him to become the king of Asgard, sent to Earth under Loki's magic to be reunited with his sons again in his dying moments.

Thor thought greatly of his father who has made him the man he is today and losing him, partly at the hands of his brother Loki was just the beginning of what Thor lost in Thor: Ragnarok.

Inspirational: When He Found His Home

Thor Ragnarok Cast stnding around Thor in his throne in Thor Ragnrok Ending

Thor lost many things in Thor: Ragnarok which is appropriate as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige defined 'Ragnarok' as "the end of all things."

Asgard is not a place, it's the people. This plot-point from the final act of Thor: Ragnarok made both audiences and Thor realize that, as is true for a king, his home is with his people and not a realm.

Felt Sorry For Thor: When He Failed to Kill Thanos

Thanos and Thor in Avengers Infinity War

One of the main discussion points between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, is Thor's failure to kill Thanos in the final act of the third movie.

Not only did this cause the snap that wiped out 50% of all living creatures in the universe, but by extension it made Thor feel 100% responsible for the deaths of his friends. This downfall is what caused his arc in Endgame which involved a very drunk god of thunder dealing with his failure.

Inspirational: When he Became The God Of Thunder

The infamous use of The Immigrant Song in Thor: Ragnarok when Thor, with the help of his father, realized who he was. That last interaction between Thor and Odin was the perfect final goodbye when Odin helps Thor to realize that his true power is within him and not in whatever weapon he happens to be carrying.

It was this transgression into the full God Of Thunder that helped him to defeat Hela, Surtur, and later on, Thanos.

Felt Sorry For Thor: When He Had Nothing More To Lose

lose

Safe to say Ragnarok and Infinity War was one big emotional roller-coaster for Thor but certainly his most heartbreaking moment was the scene in the pod between Rocket and Thor when Thor was reminiscing about all the people that he had lost. His brother, sister, father, mother, best friend, his home, and his hammer.

Thor's determination that he can survive Thanos followed by "well if I'm wrong then...what more could I lose?" created the most heartbreaking moment for fans in just a few simple words when all the memories of the people Thor has lost came rushing back.
