The Mercedes-Benz MB.OS is an operating system intended to make the automaker's future connect vehicles with the cloud and IoT. The system will focus on four main areas — powertrain, autonomous driving, infotainment, and body/comfort. The automaker isn't new to cutting-edge technology as many of its offerings, including the highly intelligent MBUX system, have always stood out.

Mercedes is partnering with Google to provide a next-gen navigation experience based on the Google Maps Platform. This will enable the system to furnish drivers with critical navigation data like real-time/predictive traffic information and automatic routing. Additionally, Mercedes EV owners can also stream videos on YouTube when parked or while using the conditionally automated system called DrivePilot, currently available in Nevada and expected in more states soon.

MB.OS also brings access to Place Details, a Google-owned service that shares detailed information about a particular area on request. Mercedes claims this will enable customers to learn more about over 200 million places of interest like hotels and restaurants. Vehicles running on the latest version of MBUX are eligible for the feature. However, this is limited to markets like China, Japan, and Korea. Despite these new offerings, Mercedes reveals it will retain existing navigation functions like range management for EVs.

Mercedes intends to widen its infotainment base through a slew of partnerships in gaming, productivity, and video applications. Drivers will experience a new level of in-vehicle gaming — particularly arcade games — following an agreement with Antstream. Additionally, Mercedes drivers in China will be able to access Tencent content. EV owners will also be able to host and participate in virtual meetings thanks to the in-vehicle integration of Zoom and Webex.

With MB.OS, Mercedes hopes to simplify and personalize its service delivery through tools like the Mercedes me ID. It will contain all customer-related data starting from purchase and financing to vehicle service appointments. It will also comprise information about charging and payment. Additionally, EV owners can tailor their settings and profile to meet certain preferences. To this effect, the automaker will introduce three subscription-based bundles offering custom-made services and upgrades. They are MB.CONNECT, MB.CHARGE, and MB.DRIVE.

The MB.CONNECT package comprises navigation, entertainment, and communication. MB.CHARGE will allow subscribers to enjoy stable charging tariffs and priority access to Mercedes-Benz’s high-power charging station network. With MB.DRIVE, s can opt to broaden the capabilities of their vehicle's active driving assistance and safety system. By 2025, drivers will be allowed to upgrade select functionalities through the Mercedes me Store, accessible by app, web, or the infotainment screen.
