One homeowner recorded quite the spectacle on their security doorcam as the Ursids meteor shower lit up the Alaskan sky. This Asteroid Impact Simulator Will Fuel Your Doomsday Paranoia
Doorcam Captures Meteor In Alaska
In a tweet shared by Reuters, a giant fireball is first seen from the top left of the footage. Its bright tail flashed and lit up the night sky as it streaked across the horizon. Within seconds, the space rock soared out of sight. The footage is impressive but more remarkable because a door camera captured the action.
This household security system wasn’t the only evidence of the Ursids meteor shower. According to fireball reports from the American Meteor Society, many in Alaska witnessed the spectacular display. John L., in Anchorage, reported that the tail had ‘Orange fragmentation/pieces splitting from main object.’ Crystal L., from Wasilla, said the meteor had a ‘sparkling explosion’ fragmentation.
In addition to the Ursids meteor shower, Earth has witnessed some spectacular fireballs this year. The Perseid meteor shower, visible in North America, took place in late July. As beautiful as those celestial rocks were, it was the meteor in Pennsylvania that erupted into a sonic boom as it burned up inside Earth’s atmosphere. The Ursids shower will continue until December 24th before returning next year. Adventurers looking for the next stellar show should look into the Quadrantids shower from December 26, 2022 to January 16, 2023.
