Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX delivered its biggest and best episode yet with episode #9, and as always, it left plenty to be excited about for episode #10 and beyond. The events of episode #9 have major implications for not only GQuuuuuuX, but the Gundam franchise as a whole, and however it all plays out will surely be great to see.

Picking up where Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #8 left off, episode #9 saw Machu escape from Zeon’s custody and make her way to Earth in a less-than-graceful landing. Machu soon found herself in a mysterious brothel, and while she was initially unsure of what to do next, Machu quickly received guidance from the GQuuuuuuX timeline’s version of iconic Gundam character Lalah Sune. Overall, it was an episode that completely changed the landscape of what GQuuuuuuX is about, and there’s no telling where episode #10 will take things from here.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Episode 8 Review: A Perfect Setup For The Final Arc

Char vs. Artesia

The main draw to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #8 was showing the Zeknova Incident, and sure enough, the anime did not disappoint. While everything that went down with Char in the lead-up wasn’t shown, as that’s part of the larger mystery in his disappearance, the drama of it all was still fun to watch play out, and the gorgeous animation accompanying it made it even better. Overall, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s Zeknova Incident was plenty worth the wait, and it will be great to see the full extent of what comes of it.

The second half of episode #8 was just as fun to watch, if not more. Not only has the increased focus on Nyaan made her one of GQuuuuuuX’s best characters, but the way the overarching plot is unfolding with elements old and new to the Universal Century timeline is incredibly fascinating, and it’s done so in a way that even newer fans can understand the gravity of everything. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX does a perfect job of bringing the story into its final act, and fortunately, episode #9 was just as good in that regard.

What Happened In Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Episode 9?

Produced By Studio Khara And Sunrise; Directed By Kohei Kuratomi

In Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #9, “The Rose of Sharon”, following Machu’s arrest, she was questioned by Challia about Shuji’s whereabouts. Challia’s Newtype abilities let him read Machu’s mind to learn that Shuji wanted to go to Earth to find the Rose of Sharon. Later, Machu realized that going to Earth would be her best chance at finding Shuji, and thanks to a mysterious person texting her, Machu escaped Zeon’s clutches and made her way to Earth to find Shuji, although Challia allowed her to escape on the hopes she could lead them to the Rose of Sharon.

To avoid crashing into the ocean, the GQuuuuuuX ejected off its jet system with Machu in it, allowing her to land somewhat safely on the ground. Machu later awoke in a brothel run by Zeon called the Kabas estate, where the maids told her that their mistress had saved Machu and provided her with first aid. As Machu realized she couldn’t just walk out of the estate, she eventually went to meet the fabled mistress, and as it turned out, Machu’s savior was Lalah Sune, who, in timeline, was never saved from the brothel by Char.

New Gundam Anime Will Finally Reveal The Moment That Completely Changed The Original Series

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #8 will be another flashback episode, and it's set to finally reveal the big event behind the new timeline.

Lalah told Machu that her dreams let her see beyond time to realities where a man in red would save her before being killed by a man in white, the events of the original timeline. Machu didn’t completely understand what she meant, but she still felt a kinship with Lalah, and when the maids set fire to the brothel to help Machu escape, Machu wanted to take Lalah with her. However, Lalah stayed at the Kabas estate to wait for Char to save her, and Lalah told Machu to find the Rose of Sharon before Machu flew off.

Machu soon found the GQuuuuuuX under the ocean atop a mysterious object that she seemed to instinctively know was the Rose of Sharon, but before she could fully process things, Challia’s forces appeared to apprehend Machu and reclaim the Rose of Sharon. After doing so, the Rose of Sharon was identified as the Elmeth, a Mobile Armor that wasn’t supposed to be in production, and to make things even more confusing, the pilot of the Elmeth was another Lalah Sune, whom Challia said came from another universe.

Gundam’s Big Reveal Completely Breaks The Franchise’s Most Controversial Twist

How Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Breaks Turn A Gundam

Dianna, Kihel, and Loran around a posting Turn A Gundam

When Turn A Gundam came out in 1999, a major twist was that every Gundam anime took place in the same universe and would eventually be destroyed by the Moonlight Butterfly, a reveal nearly unanimously disliked and routinely ignored, but fortunately, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX revealing that there’s a multiverse within the Gundam franchise effectively kills the idea of every show taking place in the same universe as posited by Turn A Gundam. Whether that was intentional or not is unclear, but with how controversial that twist was, it’s nothing but great to see.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Reinvents The Franchise In The Best Of Ways

What Makes Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Episode 9 So Great

Lalah in episode 9

Regarding the basic story, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #9 was another strong outing for the anime. Not only does Machu continue to be a strong and engaging protagonist, but after weeks of build-up to her appearance, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s take on Lalah Sune more than lived up to the hype by capturing all the same mystery and empathy invoked by the original character. Lalah Sune was someone the anime couldn’t mess up, and the anime more than succeeded in bringing this gripping new take to life.

The biggest reason why episode #9 was so great, of course, was the big multiverse twist. Not only does it completely change the scale of GQuuuuuuX’s story, but it also completely changes how people should look at Gundam as a whole, as it takes what was once an episodic franchise and lays the groundwork to have everything be connected via the multiverse. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s multiverse twist can make it the most important anime in Gundam franchise, and hopefully, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX won’t drop the ball on that.

Be sure to watch Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #10 when it releases on Tuesday, June 10.
