The Goonies is a 1980s classic that has stood the test of time, remaining just as popular today as it was upon its original release. It's a pop-culture classic, with people still quoting lines from the movie to this day, and some hilarious moments taking place throughout.
While there were several other great movies around the same time period that had a similar feel to this one, there are also plenty of modern options for people to enjoy that fans of The Goonies would appreciate. Whether it's the adventure or the brilliant comedy, there's plenty of newer movies that will give the same feelings that this classic provided.
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)
While this movie does feature adult characters for the bulk of the movie (because they're actually teenagers trapped in adult bodies), the energy and dialogue feels very familiar to The Goonies. Jumanji takes place within a video game world after the main characters get sucked in and the group has to work together in order to escape and return to their normal lives.
It provides a similar sense of adventure, which is a huge part of The Goonies' success. However, it is the arguments that the characters have and the ways that their virtual bodies are completely different from their real-life selves that make this a really fun movie with a modern twist, thanks to the video game aspect.
Onward (2020)
Onward is one of Pixar's newest movies and it takes place in a magical world where two brothers, Ian and Barley, have to race against time in order to find a gem that will allow them to bring their late father back for just one day. Of course, this turns into a huge adventure with plenty of ups and downs and it explores their personal relationship along the way.
As with any Pixar movie, this is stuffed with great comedic moments that will have audiences laughing along, but it also brings a lot of emotion, as well. The Goonies provides a great feeling of togetherness, which is something that Onward does well too.
The Kings Of Summer (2013)
Much like The Goonies, this movie has a group of friends that have to work together, this time it's during the summertime when they go together to try to live off the land by building a house in the woods, creating their own personal adventure. While the characters here leave their families because of issues at home, when they go off into the wilderness, the movie does become more lighthearted.
The three teenagers are out to have fun and live an adventure, and their friendship is something that really carries the movie throughout. They have a fun relationship and the comedy that takes place throughout is something that fans of The Goonies are sure to enjoy.
Paper Towns (2015)
While Paper Towns is technically a romantic movie, there is plenty of comedy throughout that makes it funny enough for fans of The Goonies to enjoy. There is also a real adventure in the movie as well, as Margo leaves clues for Quentin to follow in order to find her.
He gets a group of friends to help him, and this aspect is something that creates The Goonies. While they're not searching for treasure here, it is still a great adventure and the mysterious aspect of the movie is entertaining.
Holes (2003)
Much like The Goonies, Holes thrives by bringing together a group of children who are outcasts, as they are at a detention camp due to their behavior. Their punishment is to dig holes every single day, and that is because those in charge are searching for treasure, but don't want to actually do the work themselves.
The lead character, Stanley, who is portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, looks to expose those in charge. The movie doesn't quite have as much adventure as The Goonies, but it does have some fantastic young characters who are confident and that leads to some similarities between the movies.
Super 8 (2011)
After a train crash takes place in a small town, things begin to get very strange, which leads to a group of young friends to take it upon themselves to investigate what happened. The group has great chemistry, just like in The Goonies, and seeing them try to uncover what happens is a lot of fun.
While this movie does lend itself towards science fiction at points, it's just a different storytelling device than The Goonies. There's just as much fun to be had here, with elements of mystery and adventure making the movie exciting, while it is the personalities of the characters that really make it enjoyable.
Son Of Rambow (2007)
This movie is perfect for any fan of The Goonies, and while it is modern, it is also set in the '80s, which gives a similar feel to the classic comedy. The movie sees two young boys become friends, and despite the fact that their backgrounds are completely different, they become inspired by the movie, First Blood.
They decide to film their own version, which sees them head out into the woods to have a real adventure as they try to put the movie together. It's got comedy, heart, and a fantastic bond between the two young characters that makes for a really charming story.
Pan (2015)
There have been a lot of movies based around Pan, is certainly one of the most unique. It focuses on a young version of the character, looking at how he ends up in Neverland and shows him learning about his true destiny.
The movie has a lot of comedy in it, which is to be expected with any movie featuring Peter Pan, as he is a funny character. But Pan also brings plenty of adventure as well, which makes it something that The Goonies fans will love to watch.
Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)
The Goonies sees the main characters searching for treasure, so an actual movie all about pirates is likely something that fans will enjoy watching. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl is the strongest movie in the franchise and it sees Will Turner forces with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow to save the love of his life.
Of course, this movie has plenty of swashbuckling action, with some great sword fights and brilliant villains in the undead pirates. However, it is also a hilarious movie, with Jack Sparrow being a tremendously charismatic character.
Finding Ohana (2021)
one of Netflix's newest movies and one that The Goonies fans will love. The movie sees two siblings on an adventure to find treasure, while they learn all about their Hawaiian heritage along the way.
The relationships between the siblings and their friends are something that is very reminiscent of The Goonies. Plus, the fact that there is a ton of adventure throughout makes the two movies similar, although Finding Ohana has a modern-day feel to it, which is something audiences are sure to enjoy.
