Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet believes the plans for an unmade spinoff focusing on Cam Tucker (Stonestreet) and Mitchell Prichett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) would have made a great series. He also shares his feelings about ABC's decision to on the potential series. Modern Family premiered on ABC in 2009 and ran for 11 seasons before it concluded in 2020. Mitch and Cam were one of the three Pritchett family households in Los Angeles that the series followed.

In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Stonestreet discusses the plans for the unmade series. It would have followed Cam, Mitchell, their daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), and their new son Rexford in a new location. In Modern Family's series finale, Cam accepts a new coaching job in Missouri after expressing it was his dream to move back to his home state. Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd was one of the writers to work on a script for the spinoff. Although ABC decided not to go forward with the series, Stonestreet believes the follow-up would have been a success.

I think it would have been a slam dunk. I don't think it would have not been successful. Because you had one of the creators - who had really taken such great care of making sure that show was great for so long - willing to do it.

Stonestreet says that he and Ferguson were hurt by ABC's decision not to go forward with the spin-off series. "I think Jesse and I maybe felt like they thought of us as the old guys, or something like that, that didn't seem worthy of keeping those characters going. It felt a little hurtful. But people make business decisions." Despite the spinoff not moving forward, Stonestreet says that he does hope that the Modern Family cast will reunite again someday, even mentioning that he would like them to do a Christmas special.

What A Cam and Mitch Spinoff Series Could Have Meant For Modern Family

The Spinoff Would Have Taken The Couple To A New Environment

After the end of Modern Family, a follow-up series showing Cam and Mitch in Missouri would have allowed different types of stories for the couple than what was seen in Modern Family. Throughout the series, Cam would often try to find ways to incorporate aspects of his childhood from Missouri into the family's big events. The spinoff would have shown Cam in his element, where those traditions are a part of everyday life. While Mitch was more comfortable with his life in Los Angeles, whenever the couple traveled to Missouri, he was shown to feel out of place in the different environment.
