Fortunately, there is no shortage of exciting fantasy content debuting this year. With major fantasy releases like Crescent City 3, The Atlas Complex, and The Familiar already out, it can be tempting to think that the biggest books of 2024 are already on shelves. However, there are plenty more to look forward to, from standalones written by well-known authors to sequels that continue or even conclude beloved series.

15 When Among Crows By Veronica Roth

Release Date: May 14, 2024

Veronica Roth, the author of the Divergent series, returns in May with another adult fantasy novel: When Among Crows. A standalone story, When Among Crows is set in a world that exploits human emotions and souls. Whether it's through monsters feeding on such feelings or knights sacrificing parts of themselves to defeat these monsters, it's clear When Among Crows' setting is no easy place to inhabit. Dymitr and Ala know that all too well, as they are both well acquainted with suffering. And their paths collide when they set out to find a witch called Baba Jaga.

Ala wants to find Baba Jaga to cure a curse that's killing her, but she doesn't realize that Dymitr has other motivations for their quest. This adds a layer of complexity to their journey that's par for the course with Roth's writing. That alone will make When Among Crows a must-read this May.

14 Evocation By S.T. Gibson

Release Date: May 28, 2024

Evocation is the first book in S.T. Gibson's new fantasy series, The Summoner's Circle, and it sounds every bit as gripping as the author's previous work. The 2024 book will follow David Aristarkhov, who is a powerful attorney by day and a medium for a secret society by night. David's life changes when the Devil comes calling to collect an ancestral debt — one that leaves him facing down his own mortality.

Hoping to escape an early end, David tracks down his ex-boyfriend and rival, Rhys, who he soon realizes he still has feelings for. With the promise of dark magic and a gripping LGBTQ+, Evocation sounds like it could be one of the best fantasy releases of 2024. If it's anything like Gibson's other novels, it's at least worth picking up — and the promise of more books means readers are probably in for a wild ride.

13 Mirrored Heavens By Rebecca Roanhorse

Release Date: June 4, 2024

Rebecca Roanhorse's Between Earth and Sky series is coming to an end in 2024, with the final book — Mirrored Heavens — hitting shelves in June. After the success of Black Sun and Fevered Star, there's little doubt the third installment will be a hit. The bigger question is whether it will answer all the questions raised in the previous novels, bringing each character's storylines to a satisfying close. Serapio, Xiala, Naranpa are all on distinct paths after Fevered Star, but Mirrored Heavens must make sense of their journeys individually and collectively.

With the previous books containing plenty of political intrigue and celestial stakes, readers can count on tensions getting even higher before the third book's narrative is through. The stakes alone make Mirrored Heavens one of the biggest fantasy releases of 2024. Of course, it helps that Roanhorse has repeatedly released heavy-hitters.

12 Children Of Anguish And Anarchy By Tomi Adeyemi

Release Date: June 25, 2024

Tomi Adeyemi's debut novel, Children of Blood and Bone, was a massive hit in 2018 — and its sequel, Children of Virtue and Vengeance, did an impressive job of continuing the story. It's been a while since a new addition to the Legacy of Orïsha series came out, but 2024 will see the third and final book arriving at long last. Children of Anguish and Anarchy will bring Zélie's story to a close, revealing if her people prevail against the Skulls or meet a terrible fate. The much-anticipated sequel is a long time coming, so hopefully Adeyemi's finale will stick the landing.

The stakes are high heading into the final chapter of the Legacy of Orïsha, and there are plenty of threads to tie up before this story is through. It'll be great to return to Adeyemi's world after so long away. Hopefully, her masterful storytelling hasn't changed, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in her fantasy world one last time.

11 Reckless By Lauren Roberts

Release Date: July 2, 2024

Lauren Roberts' Powerless Trilogy is gaining recognition online, and that's not a surprise given how it leans into the "romantasy" category. Powerless made waves in January 2023, and its sequel, Reckless, is poised to do the same in July 2024. Pitched for fans of Sarah J. Maas' books, Powerless is set in a world where people fall into one of two categories: Elite and Ordinary. The book's main character, Paeydn, is an Ordinary — but an unexpected series of events sees her thrown into a competition for the Elites: the Purging Trials.

Paeydn spends much of the first novel attempting to fake an Elite status, and Reckless will continue her story after the Purging Trials and Powerless' bombshell ending. Given Paeydn's actions in Powerless, Reckless will see the kingdom of Ilya in a state of upheaval. It will also further complicate her relationship with Kai, which means high stakes and tensions for readers when the sequel hits shelves in July.

10 The Bright Sword By Lev Grossman

Lev Grossman is known for The Magicians trilogy, but the author is coming out with a new novel in 2024: The Bright Sword. Grossman's take on the Arthurian legend, The Bright Sword picks up right after Arthur has died — and it sees the Knights of the Round Table thrown into turmoil. The book's lead, Collum, arrives to fight for a seat at the table. However, he soon finds that the heroes of legends are just a group of misfits who don't live up to the lofty stories about them.

Grossman is a master at subverting expectations, something he proves in The Magicians. It seems The Bright Sword will follow that trend, offering a unique take on the Knights of the Round Table and the legends surrounding these figures. Although The Bright Sword seems to be a standalone, it sounds poised to leave a strong impression when it debuts.

9 The Black Bird Oracle By Deborah Harkness

Release Date: July 16, 2024

Deborah Harkness' All Souls series continues with The Black Bird Oracle in July, and it will catch readers up with Diana, Matthew, and their twins four years after Time's Convert. The previous book hit shelves in 2018, so it's been a while since fans of Harkness' fantasy world have immersed themselves within it. Excitement is high as the release date for The Black Bird Oracle approaches, and its main storyline promises to flesh out Diana's complicated family history and bring her kids into the fray.

The Black Bird Oracle will open with the Congregation demanding that Diana and Matthew's children undergo a test of magic, a call that forces Diana to reevaluate her plans for her life and family. Rather than subject the twins to the Congregation, Diana decides to return to Ravenswood, her ancestral home. Like so many other fantasy books and series coming out in 2024, Bracken's duology offers a new perspective on an ancient legend and dips its toes into the occult. Silver in the Bone introduces the mysterious land of Avalon — pulled straight from Arthurian legend — and a cast of characters eager to find it. The Mirror of Beasts will reveal what happens after their trip there goes awry.

With the aftermath of Tamsin and her friends' journey to Avalon threatening their world, The Mirror of Beasts will send them on a new quest to find the titular item of legend. It's said that the Mirror of Beasts can even ensnare Lord Death himself, but finding and wielding it won't be an easy task. Fortunately, Bracken's characters have experience doing the impossible. And readers will get to embark on another gripping journey with them before the author's latest duology is through.

7 Wisteria By Adalyn Grace

Adalyn Grace's Belladonna series concludes with Wisteria in August, which will focus on Blythe Hawthorne as she navigates the consequences of binding herself to a man. The fact that Blythe isn't accustomed to asking permission or being told what to do creates even more turbulence regarding her circumstances. She refuses to let them change who she is, but things get complicated when Blythe learns more about herself and the situation she's fallen into. It sounds like her internal struggle will take up much of the third Belladonna book, which means plenty of drama for readers.

There also promises to be romance, and if it's anything like Belladonna and Foxglove, deadly stakes, too. Such ingredients set Wisteria up to be a hot topic of discussion when it arrives this summer. It won't be easy bidding farewell to the world Grace has set up, but hopefully, Blythe's story will bring it to a satisfactory close.

6 Throne Of Secrets By Kerri Maniscalco

Kerri Maniscalco is known for her Stalking Jack the Ripper and Kingdom of the Wicked series, and now the author is making her way through her Princes of Sin books. 2023's Throne of the Fallen drew readers into Envy and Camilla's world, telling a lush story and a compelling romance that became a hit on BookTok. Although Throne of Secrets is part of the same series, it will feature a new dark romance narrative, this time centering on Gabriel Axton and Adriana Saint Lucent.

Gabriel is the Prince of Gluttony, whose demon court is in dire straits. He'll have to work alongside journalist Adriana if he hopes to save it, but the two don't exactly have a stellar relationship. Cue an adventure that sees them getting to know one another and racing the clock to save Gabriel's kingdom. Their quest to uncover the truth sounds every bit as gripping as Envy and Camilla's story, and it will likely leave readers wanting more from Maniscalco's Princes of Sin world.
