The Super Mario Bros. Movie

One of the biggest animated movies of all time will be leaving Netflix on October 2. The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought one of the most iconic video games of all time to the big screen decades after the infamous and disastrous live-action attempt. The movie follows plumber brothers Mario and Luigi who are taken out of their normal life in Brooklyn and transplanted in the wonderous and vibrant Mushroom Kingdom. There, Mario must help the princess fight the villainous Bowser, who has also captured Luigi.

The movie features a star-studded voice cast with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black in a scene-stealing role as Bowser. The movie is also packed with endless easter eggs for fans of the Mario universe. While still not considered the best video game movie adaptation by all fans, the success of the movie is impressive and it offers some family-friendly entertainment while it is still around on Netflix.

It Follows (2014)

There are a lot of great horror movies coming to Netflix in time for Halloween, but the platform will unfortunately be losing one of the genre’s best offerings of the past decade. It Follows is an incredible unique and gripping horror movie that has become an instant classic since its release. With an intense vibe and a clever movie monster, it is one of the movies that epitomizes the early days of the so-called “elevated horror movies” of the 2010s.

Modern horror iconic Maika Monroe stars as Jay, a young woman who goes on a date with a boy and sleeps with him, only to discover that the act have transferred a deadly curse from him to her. Jay is now stalked by an entity who is only seen to her and can take the form of anyone. While the movie will be leaving Netflix on October 10, there is still time to watch it before Halloween and before the It Follows 2.

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)

October 21 will mark the last chance for Netflix s to watch one of the most talked-about music biopics in recent years. I Wanna Dance with Somebody brings the story of acclaimed and groundbreaking singer Whitney Houston to the big screen with all the iconic songs and big moments from both her successful professional life and her complicated personal life. Naomi Ackie stars as Whitney Houston in the story of how she rose from obscurity and became one of the biggest stars in music.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody does not break any new ground in of the storytelling in music biopics, but it is a riveting and exciting story for those who are familiar and unfamiliar with her story. Fans of Houston’s music will be especially enchanted as the movie recreates some of her most iconic music moments.

The Child’s Play Franchise

October 31 will mark the end of the Halloween season and Netflix looks to quickly be getting rid of one of the long-running horror franchises in its library. Child’s Play takes an ittedly silly premise and has used it to create one of the most iconic horror movie villains of all time – Chucky the doll. The first movie sets up the idea of a serial killer who was able to transfer his soul into a children’s doll before he died. He then uses his new doll form to seek revenge.

Despite the ridiculous premise, the Child’s Play movies always leaned into the silliness while also providing enough to delight horror fans. The later entries, like Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, ended up basically being horror comedies. No matter the tone, Chucky made for a unique and memorable movie killer with him having some of the fun of Freddy Krueger.

Key & Peele: Seasons 1-3

One of the best sketch comedy shows of all time will be leaving Netflix on October 31. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele were both cast on Mad TV before they partnered up and made their own series with Key & Peele. As creators of the show, the duo were able to embrace their own unique sense of humor and deliver hilarious commentary on everything from race to politics to relationships to Gremlins 2.

Peele obviously went on to an incredible career as a director while Key has remained a busy actor with endless roles in movies and television. However, it is fun to look back on the outstanding sketches the two comedians provided audiences with Key & Peele’s football player, valets, and substitute teacher skits being among the most memorable.
