Most All For One, since its definition reveals itself right in the name, suggesting that the evildoer takes and hoards everyone's unique Quirks all for himself. However, another story fans may not know about My Hero Academia's cruelest villain is the origin story of his last name.

Eventually, All For One's real name was revealed to be Zen Shigaraki, also hinting at his link to Tomura Shigaraki. Shigaraki was not All For One's given last name though, he chose it for himself for a despicable reason.

Even All For One's Last Name Represents His Evil Origins

The Villain Named Himself After a Sex Worker Who Died in Tragic, Mysterious Circumstances

In the My Hero Academia universe, a sex worker nicknamed Shigaraki Tanuki was found murdered and left for dead by a river bank, and the story of what happened to her began to spread. When All For One heard about this poor woman's unfortunate demise, he chose to take her name for himself out of morbid curiosity and connection with her story. Shigaraki Tanuki led a difficult life, and never received any customers despite her efforts, although she stationed herself in the red-light district day in and day out, even while heavily pregnant.

My Hero Academia Got It Wrong: Why All For One's Real Enemy Was Bakugo From the Start

The real nemesis of My Hero Academia's main villain, All for One, was always Bakugo, as proven by their stories and personalities.

Her real name is unknown, but her nickname, "Shigaraki Tanuki," originates from a familiar style of raccoon statue with a large belly, meaning this nickname cruelly poked fun at her heavily pregnant state. There was no justice for Shigaraki Tanuki even after death, because a contemptible villain like All For One corrupted her name even after she was gone. Although it was never confirmed that he was responsible for the murder, he resonated with her story and took on her name for himself. Once he learned of her story, he thoughtlessly compared her to a monster.

Not Only Did He Ruin Tenko’s Life and Family, He Forced Him to Adopt This New Name With Sad Origins

My Hero Academia: The villains warp in using All for One's "goop" warp.

The name, Shigaraki, was implemented by Zen as his last name, and it was the surname he gave Tomura Shigaraki, who was Tenko Shimura when All For One adopted him after the deaths of his family . Just as Zen used Tanuki's name for his gain, he forced Tomura to work for him, gave him the Decay Quirk that destroyed his life and the lives of his family , and molded him into a wicked villain by weaponizing Tenko's past trauma against him to turn him against heroes entirely, when the real evil in his life was All For One.

like stealing Quirks and killing heroes, but also through the way he treats others, like Tomura and Tanuki. All For One has no qualms about ruining the lives of others if it increases his power levels, and another disturbing detail about him is that he has no true motivation. All For One is evil purely out of self-interest and because it is his desire. He never attempts to make justifications for his vile actions, because he does not care how they affect other people.

The Story of Shigaraki Tanuki Illuminates How All For One is Evil to the Core

No Kindness Is Present in the Villain, Shown in His Willingness to Use This Tragic Death in a Vile Way

A young All For One in the second opening of season 7

The fact that Zen carelessly used a gruesome tragedy like Tanuki's death to inspire his name only proves how downright horrible he is to the core. As Kohei Horikoshi, the author of My Hero Academia, continues to reveal new details of his backstory, it only further illuminates the lengths he will go to in order to manipulate and harm others. It is rare to see a villain so unpleasant, seemingly without a shred of goodness or mercy in their body, but All For One certainly fits this description, and the distressing story of Shigaraki Tanuki is just one example why.
