The Legend of Korra canon graphic novels pick up where the animated series left off, expanding upon Korra’s battles to keep Republic City and the Spirit World safe. Now a new graphic novel, The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island by Kiku Hughes, Alex Monik, and Diana Sousa, is set for a March 4th, 2025 release date.

The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island centers on brothers Mako and Bolin as they set out on an adventure together - one that could lead to answers about their family’s past. The official description from Dark Horse, the publishers of the Avatar graphic novels, states:

When a strange missing persons case falls into his lap, Mako is forced to choose between his job and doing what he feels is right! An upturned room and an unhelpful witness aren’t promising starts to the investigation, but when his brother Bolin comes across a surprising clue that ties their own mother to the case, the pair embark on a journey to the small, rustic island of Penquan. The island’s inhabitants seem to have things to hide, and the brothers are determined to get to the bottom of it—even if it means uncovering uncomfortable parts of their family’s past.

The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island Is Part of Continuity

Mako and Bolin are important characters in the original Legend of Korra animated series and its ongoing continuity, as the two brothers comprise half of Korra’s “Team Avatar,” with benders when Korra first meets them. Bolin even pioneered lava bending, which is a subset of earthbending, similar to how Toph invented metalbending in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The graphic novel, Mystery of Penquan Island, promises to bring Mako and Bolin to the center stage.

For a time, both brothers were police officers of Republic City under Chief Beifong, who is Toph’s daughter. However, at the end of the graphic novel, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars by Michale Dante DiMartino and Irene Koh, Bolin quits the force, as he does not see a future career in policing. Instead, Bolin goes on to become the President’s personal assistant. Mako, however, stays on as a police officer. Careers as a police officer and a high ranking political official set the stage for Mako and Bolin’s involvement in a missing persons case.

And Hopefully Find Answers About Their Past Along the Way

Bolin, Asami, Mako, and Korra all take fighting stances in The Legend of Korra

In the animated series, Mako and Bolin’s past is a subplot introduced within the first few episodes. While Mako is a firebender and Bolin is an earthbender, it’s revealed that their father was from the Earth Kingdom and their mother hailed from the Fire Nation. Both parents were killed by a firebender, leaving Mako and Bolin orphaned at a young age. The brothers discover paternal relatives in the Earth Kingdom. However, nothing is known about their mother’s background or family. Incorporating their mother’s unknown background into Mystery of Penquan Island makes the The Legend of Korra graphic novel all the more exciting.

The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island is available March 4th, 2025 from Dark Horse Comics.
