WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Get Fury #6
Marvel Comics Ennis' return to the Punisher would return with such a groundbreaking change to the character's history, though what this means for the future remains to be determined.
Get Fury #6 – written by Garth Ennis, with art by Jacen Burrows – brings the miniseries to its bleak conclusion. Castle completes his mission, recovering the captured Fury behind enemy lines, with the two barely surviving the encounter.
Later, while being debriefed by the CIA, the topic of what to do with Frank Castle comes up. “Take him out of Recon,” Fury says. “Send him somewhere quiet so he can cool off.” Castle is then sent to a firebase on the Cambodian border: Valley Forge, where Castle’s fate would be sealed in blood.
Marvel Reveals Nick Fury Is Responsible For Creating The Punisher, In A Major Canon Shake-Up
Get Fury #6 – Written By Garth Ennis, Art By Jacen Burrows, Nolan Woodard & Rob Steen
The story of what then happened at Valley Forge was previously told in Punisher: Born, a four-issue miniseries from giving birth to the Punisher.
While Castle undoubtedly hears a voice during the Valley Forge battle, the story is ambiguous whether this is some demonic entity (if not Death itself) or merely a dark reflection of Frank Castle’s psyche.
The knowledge that Nick Fury was responsible for sending Frank Castle to Valley Forge explains a lot about the relationship portrayed between the characters, especially as depicted in Ennis’ later Punisher MAX series. Every time the characters would cross each other’s paths in the years after Vietnam, Fury always seemed to be deceiving Castle in some way. The events of Get Fury help to better define that relationship with a dark twist. Castle saves Fury’s life by rescuing him from the enemy, but he was repaid by getting sent to a hell of an entirely different sort.
Garth Ennis' Return To Punisher Puts A Bow On His Most Influential Marvel Work
Punisher: Born – Written By Garth Ennis; Art By Darick Robertson.
In that way, Get Fury provides an excellent conclusion to Frank Castle and Nick Fury’s story; born with good intentions, but sealed in blood. By showing the sins of the past, the subsequent relationship seen in the Punisher MAX story gives fans the final piece of context to understanding a little of what makes both men tick. Revealing that Nick Fury was in part responsible for Frank Castle’s transformation into the Punisher adds to the rich mythology created by Garth Ennis in his own little corner of the Marvel MAX line.
