Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Night Court season 2 finale.
Summary
- The season 2 finale reveals that Dan may be Jake's father.
- Melissa Rauch is excited to delve into the mystery of the paternity reveal in season 3.
- Night Court season 3 has yet to be renewed.
The Night Court season 2 finale cliffhanger sets up storylines for season 3, according to star Melissa Rauch. The sitcom debuted on NBC in January 2023, and is a revival of the original series of the same name that aired from 1984-1992. It stars Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, who moves to New York to take a magistrate job in a night court, and she appears alongside original series returning cast member John Larroquette, as well as an ensemble cast.
According to Rauch, in an interview with The Wrap, the return of legacy cast member Roz, and her wedding, was a seminal moment for the show. Additionally, The Big Bang Theory actress also discussed the season 2 cliffhanger ending that revealed Dan may be Jake's father, and how this plot twist could form a key part of any potential season 3 storyline.
We’re really excited to explore what that is going to be and start crafting what the resolution to that mystery is. We were all really thrilled with that idea [of leaving] season 2 on that very fun cliffhanger.
Will Night Court Be Renewed For Season 3?
Season 2's Finale Sets Up A Season 3 Storyline
"During the wedding, Abby chats with her boyfriend Jake's mother, and comes to realize that colleague Dan might be Jake's biological father."
The successful revival of Night Court has proved to be a hit for NBC, and though there hasn't been an official renewal yet, there is every chance Night Court season 3 could happen, particularly as Rauch has expressed interest in returning, stating "I would love to do this show for as long as we possibly can." The good news is that the season 2 finale means a storyline is already in place for season 3.
Here is a list of some of the cast who could return if Night Court season 3 is greenlit.

During Roz and Loretta's Abby chats with her boyfriend Jake's mother, and comes to realize that colleague Dan might be Jake's biological father. The storyline makes sense, given Dan's womanizing past in the original Night Court, and this is one of the key plot points that the writers could choose to explore for season 3, should the series be renewed.

Night Court Guest Star Ryan Hansen Breaks Down Onscreen Romance With Melissa Rauch's Abby Stone
Screen Rant interviews Ryan Hansen about filming episode 9's sensitivity training scene and the future of Jake and Abby's relationship in Night Court.
The fact that the season ended on such a cliffhanger sets up a promising future storyline for Dan, Jake, and Abby if Night Court season 3 should happen, and the consistent ratings throughout the season's run also paint a positive picture for the future. Hopefully, Night Court will be renewed for season 3 to give a satisfying conclusion to the cliffhanger reveal.
